Syria Crisis: Russia And China Step Up Warning Over Strike
Source: BBC
Russia and China have stepped up their warnings against military intervention in Syria, with Moscow saying any such action would have "catastrophic consequences" for the region.

Russian foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich has called on the international community to show "prudence" over the crisis and observe international law.
"Attempts to bypass the Security Council, once again to create artificial groundless excuses for a military intervention in the region are fraught with new suffering in Syria and catastrophic consequences for other countries of the Middle East and North Africa," he said in a statement.
Late on Monday, the US said it was postponing a meeting on Syria with Russian diplomats, citing "ongoing consultations" about alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.

(10,745 posts)Okay, maybe I got just a TAD too harsh, I'll admit that. But there's quite a few reasons why WWIII is far less likely these days than some might think; economics is one of them, as well as the fact that it's not 1983 anymore.

(23,367 posts)MAD is still a reality, but all commentators seems to think it's not. History develops with "surprises." We will see...
AverageJoe90
(10,745 posts)Here's a very basic explanation of some of the reasons why:
First of all, both China & Russia are heavily dependent on the international market, particularly the former; do you really think Beijing would want to make that kind of a gamble? Their economy would collapse within a week! And then there's the nuclear question: as much of a crook as Putin is, do you really think he'd be willing to gamble with 160 million Russian lives over a dictator whom, like the Iranians, even if not by as much of a degree, isn't exactly a genuine ally, and might actually turn on them in the right circumstances? Putin may be a crook, ditto for Hu Jintao, but he's no Hitler.....Hitler might actually just have gone and nuked people if he'd gotten the chance to do so.
I don't doubt this has the potential to turn into a very nasty regional war, but definitely not WWIII; even Yom Kippur and the war in '82 didn't get to that stage, and both of them had a rather higher chance of doing so, too, in a much more polarized and less connected world.
Also, I'd like to point out that MAD, too, is another reason why WW3 isn't likely. Even if the Russians & Chinese *had* wanted to attack us, they know that they would risk being totally annihilated, even if they took us down pretty hard.
It does kinda bother me that so many people out there are still stuck in Cold War era thinking; this isn't the '80s anymore.
David__77
(23,367 posts)The problem is that too many people are still stuck in the 90s. This isn't a unipolar world any more.
AverageJoe90
(10,745 posts)Again, there just isn't that much potential for WWIII to break out over Syria. And for another thing, China absolutely depends on the world market and the Russians themselves not only have some connections to the European market(certainly not as tight as China's relationship with the U.S., but it IS there) but they're having increasing amount of domestic issues as well.....made only worse by Putin's recent anti-LGBT agitprop & that dirty law that followed right behind it.

(30 posts)First Iraq, then Libya and now Syria. This is right out of the PNAC handbook. Next it will be Iran. Currently Nato is encircling both Russia and China with numerous missile installations among other aggressions. It's just a matter of time before one or both of those nations will find themselves on the receiving end of western attempts to dominate the planet.

(8,127 posts)what right do they have to tell others not to meddle while THEY are meddling ?
AverageJoe90
(10,745 posts)For all my remaining skepticism.....I really do think we should be a lot more careful, and we certainly *should have* jettisoned the BushCo people a long time ago.....I really do wish Putin would shut up; he's got a crisis of his own making to deal with, and it's obvious that the establishment TPTB puppets in the Kremlin are only doing this because they are becoming desperate for distractions right now, and Syria just happens to be convenient.

(11,619 posts)with ground forces. There has been no buildup of conventional ground forces in the region. Everything says this will be a limited air campaign, likely with cruise missiles because Syria has a very good Air Defense system that would take a lot of time and effort to dismantle. We could not dismantle it without considerable effort, time, and a lot ordnance and probable loss of life and aircraft.
Russia and China stand as the only winners of this exchange, since anything we destroy they will have to sell to Assad. Cha-Ching.
Iran has also threatened to attack Israel, but threatening to do that is what they do. I've wondered if the country owns stock in the gas mask industry because they sell like hot potatoes every time a sabre rattles.
One correction. The various weapons industries will make a killing over this. Cha-Ching.

(10,745 posts)The truth is, I'm still skeptical about an intervention myself.....I mean, sure, it did work out in the end for the Libyans, but given that it seems that the BushCo factions of the Intel people and the military seem hell bent on their own objectives(and with many, getting back at Obama!).....I'd like to see the crazies brought under control first, with the only the saner people on board; the saner factions of the military would only arm those rebel factions who we know to not be terrorists.....and they're still struggling for control of the effort right now.
