Russia Calls Urgent UN Council Meeting On Syria

UNITED NATIONS — A U.N. diplomat says Russia has called for an urgent meeting of the five permanent Security Council members on the crisis in Syria.

The meeting among Russia, the United States, China, Britain and France was expected later Thursday, according to the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks were private.

...with Russia on the UN Security Counsel. Just like this meeting called by Russia is a complete waste of time.

Putin isn't calling this meeting to find a peaceful alternative, or guarantees of a %100 surgical strike. He wants to stop all involvement from the US/UK/France/Arab nations to satisfy his own agenda. Putin could give a shit about the Syrian people. If Obama cared, he would have gotten involved 100,000 deaths ago...but they weren't American citizens, so forget them.

Everyone is selfish: Assad, the Al-Qaeda backed rebels, Russian, China, Obama, Cameron, Arab nations, etc. Even most of the DUers, from the posts I've seen recently. "Our people(Americans) aren't caught in the middle, why should we be bothered?". Yeah, that's a liberal mentality.

And then there are all the recent "Give Peace a chance?" and "War!, what is it good for?" calls from my fellow DUers. Why wasn't all of this aimed at Assad and the rebels 100,000, 75,000, 50,000 deaths ago??? In addition, exactly how do you plan on convincing Assad and the (dare I say Al-Qaeda backed) rebels to embrace a non-forceful resolution? Huh??? A dream without a plan is a wish, and I'm reading a bunch of wishful thinking and knee jerk US/Obama bashing posts without EXACT details on a non-forceful approach. And when I say EXACT DETAILS, I mean details that don't give me any chance to respond with "and how are you going to do that?".

I'm not holding my breath.

6. So. . . We should play god? And who should win?

Those Syrians that support the Muslim brotherhood in Egypt? The faction that supports Iran? The other faction at thinks Israel and the US should suffer? Assad, who has always wanted to best his father and be a power broker for the entire ME?

When you talk about tens and hundreds of thousands of deaths, everyone there is fighting and killing.

So the only possible conclusion is you want to play god. Or worse, you want our military to play god.

The UN security council meeting is over, with a whimper, the Guardian's Ed Pilkington reports:

All the delegations - US, France, Russia and China - other than the British have slunk out through a back exit, avoiding having to face the assembled media of the world. Not exactly a confidence-building display of global accountability.
