Rand Paul opposes U.S. attack if it could kill Christians in Syria
By David Edwards

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) said on Tuesday that an attack on Syria would be a bad idea if U.S. weapons were used to kill Christians.
In an interview with conservative radio host Mike Huckabee, Paul said that President Barack Obama needed to understand that there are 2 million Christians living in Syria, more than just about any place in the Middle East.
And I just dont want to see my kids or weapons of the United States being used to kill Christians in Syria, he explained.
Paul called on the president to try and convince a joint session of Congress that action in Syria was necessary.

(55 posts)when speaking to fundamentalist christians which Huckabee and his listeners are, you can easily win them over when you can show them that a war will harm Christians or Jews. Just convince them that those 2 groups would be hurts and they will side with you. It is a lazy way of going about it but it works.

(23,320 posts)The US would be killing Christians and other faith community members as well. It is true that the US targets probably would disproportionately kill Christians, who are overrepresented in the Syrian security and armed forces, engaged in a battle against terrorism.

(2,364 posts)Seems like a lot of people here may not know that Paul was one of only three members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that voted against arming the Syrian rebels.
Tim Kaine, for example, voted for it. And for what it's worth, I don't believe for a second that Paul did so just to protect Syrian Christians.
karynnj
(59,498 posts)and used them are disproportionately Christian as well?
More to the point, how does this make Paul "right". I would have no problem if he said that no one should be killed by us. That at least would not be bigoted. Is it worse to kill a Muslim baby or a Christian serviceman protecting a chemical weapons depot?
David__77
(23,320 posts)He would be totally right if he left out the sectarian reference.

(59,498 posts)I suspect that it was designed to win over to his side the usually prowar KY constituents who actually would agree with killing if it were all Muslims. (I assume this is NOT many KY people, but it is part of the Republican base.)
David__77
(23,320 posts)But I think that it is reasonable to point specifically to the plight of Syrian Christians. They are being "cleansed" indeed. They were driven from Qusayr and many other towns and villages seized by the insurgents. But I do agree than the statements that were made were cynically made to appeal to those who care nothing for non-Christians.

essentially CATHOLIC (OMG!) I expect that he would

Syria has no oil to speak of, so I wonder why he is
even paying attention -- aside from the opportunity
to kill some Muslims and start Armageddon.
What about woman and children of any faith, Rant ? Do they
matter at all ?
He makes a fitting caricature for the term "douche-nozzle".

(59,498 posts)I have no idea what the religion was of the people killed by chemical weapons - and I don't care. Rand Paul - and many Americans do - as his statement suggests that it is worse to kill a Christian than to kill a Muslim. Even for innocent children. Somehow this is NOT what I learned as a young Catholic!
This actually suggests that Rand Paul would want Assad - even after this atrocity - as head of Syria. He has had the Christians as allies and the alternatives are Islamists of varying degrees of radicalness.
