Town official who called for Obama to be shot resigns committees
Published: Aug. 29, 2013 at 4:30 PM
SABATTUS, Maine, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- A Maine man who was questioned by the Secret Service after calling for President Barack Obama to be shot says he resigned from three volunteer town committees.
David Marsters, 68 -- a retired police officer who is running for town selectman -- said he notified the Sabattus Board of Selectmen by email Thursday he is quitting his assignments on committees dealing with budget and ordinance review and town charter matters, the Portland Press Herald reported.
The board was scheduled to meet Thursday night to consider removing Marsters from the committees because he had posted "Shoot the [N-word] ... ," accompanied by a photo of Obama, on his Facebook page Aug. 23.
Secret Service agents questioned Marsters Tuesday.
Town Manager Andrew Gilmore said in a news release Thursday the town accepted Marsters' resignation. Gilmore thanked Marsters for "sparing the town and community further spectacle," the newspaper reported.

(2,673 posts)I am 74 years old and I don't think I have ever seen the level of hate in this country, not even in the 1960's with the racial riots and war protests. It is starting to worry me, why we are go divided. Yes, there has always been arguments, name calling and protests, but I have never seen as much disrespect shown for our President. To have a member of congress call out in the chambers -"you lie" to our president is unheard of. The compare him to a Nazi or Hitler or a monkey - it makes me sick. To use a picture of him for a gun target, - how could they - what are they teaching their children. I very much disliked G. Bush, I did not vote for him for governor and certainly not for President. I was very opposed to the Iraq war, but he was still our president and I would never call him a bad name, I have too much respect for the office and for our country.

(10,479 posts)hear all the terrible things that are being said and shown I wonder what country I am living in. What really worries me is nothing seems to be done about it. All that is done is talk and more talk. I fear that it will continue and a Republican crowd will take over our country. The meanness will continue. I will be 81 years old Sept.1st and never in all my years would have believed what is happening.

Remember the story from Terrel Bell, Prunefaces's shocked Secretary of Education, who heard White House staff refer to Dr. King as "Martin Lucifer Coon"?
The guy made it OK to be a racist, again.

(12,497 posts)In 2002 Karl Rove said "this is the beginning of a PERMANENT republican majority". Then the guy the republicans voted for went and did the unspeakable, the unimaginable....he went and LOST 2 freaking wars, and ended up kicking the can down the road that ended up with a Black guy cleaning up the mess.....imho.

While I see your point and do appreciate it:
There were lots of references to Dubya as a chimp (you may still find usernames referencing that). And where do you think the website "Smirking Chimp" got its name? Personally, I think it's an insult to chimpanzees, who can be quite intelligent. But I agree in theory at least, it's very disrespectful to the office and the country. On the other hand, IMHO the country deserves some disrespect for allowing that charlatan to get anywhere close to enough votes to steal the election like he did. Oops, there I did it again.
All that said - if I haven't completely lost you by now - it's common sense not to post stuff about shooting the president, regardless who he is and how much you despise him. And as long as we claim to support democracy and accept that we have at least a quasi-semblance of one, people need to accept the results and just work to change the results the next time around, rather than going around talking about shooting elected officials.
