Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will become the first Supreme Court member to conduct a same-sex marriage ceremony Saturday when she officiates at the Washington wedding of Kennedy Center President Michael M. Kaiser.

The gala wedding of Kaiser and economist John Roberts at the performing arts center brings together the nation’s highest court and the capital’s high society and will mark a new milepost in recognition of same-sex unions.

Ginsburg seemed excited during a recent interview about being the first member of the court to conduct such a ceremony and said it was only a logical next step.

“I think it will be one more statement that people who love each other and want to live together should be able to enjoy the blessings and the strife in the marriage relationship,” Ginsburg said. She added: “It won’t be long before there will be another” performed by a justice. Indeed, she has another planned for September.

Justice Ginsburg Presides at Same-Sex Wedding

Saturday marked the first time that a Supreme Court member conducted a same-sex marriage ceremony.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated at the marriage of a longtime friend, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts President Michael M. Kaiser, to economist John Roberts in the atrium of the center in Washington.

Kaiser has been president of the center since 2001.

A representative of the center said the wedding was not a gala event – “just a ceremony followed by a dinner” – but added that the guest list included more than 200 attendees.

We need more people like her on the SCOTUS. I once heard a comedian say that gay people should be allowed to get married and be miserable like the rest of us! Lol, all kidding aside, congrats to the couple.

They just can't understand that it's not against the law to have different beliefs from them.
