Controversial pastor Terry Jones arrested before carrying out Quran book-burning in Mulberry
Source: WTSP-Tampa
Mulberry, Florida -- 10 News has learned that controversial Gainesville pastor Terry Jones was taken into custody before he carried out his plan to burn nearly 3,000 copies of the Islam holy book the Quran in Polk County on Wednesday afternoon.
Jones planned to burn the books at the county-owned Loyce E. Harpe Park in Mulberry, but was denied a permit, with officials saying he filed his request too late and that he does not have permission for an event of that magnitude.
But shortly before he planned to set the Qurans on fire, Jones was stopped at a nearby McDonald's. His truck was towing a large barbecue smoker, which reportedly had copies of the Quran inside, doused in kerosene.
Polk deputies took Jones into custody and was arrested. The Lakeland Ledger reports Jones and an associate are facing traffic-related offenses for driving with kerosene in the grill.

Asshole got arrested for transporting kerosene in an unapproved container.
They should charge him with aggravated ignorance too.

(478 posts)Far as I know you still have the right to free expression in this country -- even if it pisses other people off or calls their traditions stupid!
Hurting people's "feelings" is not a hate crime.
I am shocked that you are not aware of the first amendment. The error he committed was not having a burn permit -- burning Korans is not a crime -- nor is burning bibles or any other "holy" book. Sheesh!

(478 posts)Of course he meant disrespect! That's what the 1st Amendment is all about -- The right to disrespect other viewpoints. That's why all they could do to him is create problems with burn permits and transport methods -- they can't possibly charge him with a hate crime and they know it. And if he finds some private property outside in a county that allows open burning, well there go a bunch of books that he bought and paid for just to burn. They are his property to do with as he pleases.
Are you saying the KKK marches are not meant to incite hatred and possibly violence? What about the Nazi marchers.
Heck, it wasn't that long ago that a gay pride parade caused hatred and violence because it disrespected traditional values!

he's doing, constantly trying to incite violence and hatred. He's a dog spoiling for a fight. If what he has to sell was any good, he would not be reduced to denigrating the ideas of others in comparison. The verse describing how those who do believe, should be able to defend their faith in a free and open marketplace, was not on his reading list. He wants that shut down, he's afraid.
You can't stop an idea whose time has come. I'm not claiming that Islam is that idea. But this is the most ignorant and hateful way of shutting them down. And it sure isn't going to bring them to believe in Christianity!
Christian or other faiths or other philosophies with the values of forgiveness, acceptance and love for all people and living things, cannot be beat. Focus on that, and not the competition.
I'd call this hater a moron, but that would insult them. And I mean no offense to dogs, either. This is really is endemic to human being, or human doings.
