Tiny North Dakota Town Braces Against Neo-Nazi Plans for All-White Community...

The tiny town of Leith in North Dakota is bracing itself for a potentially turbulent weekend. Its 24-strong population is set to be overrun by opposing busloads of neo-Nazis attempting to create a white supremacist community there and their anti-racist detractors.

Jeff Schoep, commander of the American National Socialist Movement (NSM), is preparing to travel from Detroit to Leith to hold a town-hall meeting and press conference on Sunday afternoon. On the NSM website, he describes the trip as a "gesture of goodwill", but goes on to say ominously that the aim is to "plant the seeds of National Socialism in North Dakota".

Anti-racist activists are also expected to descend on Leith from other parts of North Dakota and neighbouring Minnesota. "We cannot accept this racist hatred they are bringing here – Leith is in crisis and is crying out for help," one of the organisers, Jeremy Kelly, told the Bismarck Tribune.

For the residents of Leith, the prospect of a weekend filled with white supremacist grandstanding is highly unwelcome. The town mayor, Ryan Schock, told the Guardian "people are very concerned. They do not want people to come to this town who have hate in them."...

Small towns like that can't be left to the mercy of racist thugs who are so cowardly they swarm over a small town.

The anti-fascist protestors are a lot less likely to create trouble, but the probability of trouble is close to 1.0.

Have to say, it takes some courage to face down neo-Nazis en masse.

Rajneeshpuram was an intentional community (or commune) of Rajneeshees. On September 18, 1984, Antelope's charter was amended by a vote of 57 to 22 to change the name of the city to Rajneesh. In November, Rajneesh, who had originally pleaded innocent to charges of immigration fraud, changed his plea to guilty and was allowed to leave the United States under the terms of a plea bargain.

7. Ah, yes, I remember that well!

Interesting times in Oregon. For years I didn't wear red, to make sure I wasn't mistaken for one of the Bhagwan's followers, even though I was on the other side of the Cascades. Those Rajneeshis, they seemed to be everywhere! Felt sorry for the residents of Antelope, who stood helpless in the face of the takeover.

Hope the folks in Leith fare better!

I'd be considering calling up the ND National Guard to standby as a lil 'welcoming committee' for these bus loads of racists -- just to be sure law and order is maintained and all. Was it Eisenhower who said Always Meet Force (perceived threat by bussed-in bigots) with Overwhelming Force?

20. I read another article about this town.

There is one black resident. His wife said they are very worried, that they had lived there for years with no problems and now this happens. I bet the locals will support him. Small town folks don't like out of towners coming in and causing problems.
