UAW to protest Romney at Daytona 500
BY DAVID SHEPARDSON DETROIT NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU
Washington- The United Auto Workers will fly a banner over the Daytona 500 NASCAR race on Sunday, reminding voters of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's opposition to the auto bailout.
The Detroit-based union will pay to fly a plane and banner from 10:30-11:30 a.m. that will read "Mitt Romney: Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" a reference to a headline on a November 2008 New York Times op-ed that Romney wrote opposing a U.S. bailout of General Motors and Chrysler. The union also protested Romney's appearance on Friday at Ford Field in Detroit.
Romney will attend the Daytona 500 Sunday before returning to Michigan for a rally on Sunday night in Traverse City. Romney has insisted he would not have let the U.S. auto industry collapse, but urged a quicker bankruptcy filing without government help upfront.
Most experts have said GM and Chrysler would not have survived in late 2008 without emergency assistance that was approved by President George W. Bush. Romney has sharply criticized the UAW -and the Obama administration for agreeing to give a union health care trust fund significant stakes in both companies as part of the $85 billion auto bailout.

(4,436 posts)Meanwhile, Rick Santorum has plucked down hundreds of thousands to sponsor a car of his own in the race.
But noody told Rick that in NASCAR, all the turns are always to the LEFT.
I am afraid that SANTORUM car is very likely to end up getting REAR-ENDED.
And you KNOW the driver won't be using any protection....

(1,074 posts)not Obama enthusiasts by any stretch of the imagination, no way. Actually it's a confusing alliance with the UAW, all thse race fans, and probably a handful that would ever vote for a Democrat or Obama.

I think this is poor messaging by the UAW.

(1,416 posts)GM did go bankrupt and reorganized under chapter 11. Romney would has accelerated what happened saving billions by reducing time of idle plants and unemployment claims. Those who had driven the company into the toilet (management, bankers, and bond holders) would not have received tax payer bailouts.
Sad how UAW negotiated for it's new employees to work for poverty wages. A race to the bottom.
Many of the guttered plants could have been retooled to build wind turbines, solar panels, locomotives, etc.

(9,983 posts)I hope Front Row got paid in advance - 'cuz it's not unknown for sponsors to go bust at Daytona, or in the first couple weeks, and it can put a driver or owner out of the top ranks permanently - ask Brett Bodine or Darrel Waltrip!
