Reid: Boehner backed out of deal
Source: The Hill
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Thursday said Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) reneged on a deal they hashed out in private earlier this year to pass a clean stopgap bill funding the government.
Reid said Boehner never wanted to wage a protracted battle over ObamaCare as part of the negotiations to keep the government running.
I know that thats not the path he preferred, Reid said. I know that because we met the first week we came back in September and he told me that what he wanted was a clean CR and the $988 [billion] number.
We didnt like the 988 number. We didnt like it but we negotiated. That was our compromise, Reid added. The exact bill that he now refuses to let the House vote on. That was our negotiation.

As if you needed more evidence that Boehner was weak and that it would be waste of time to talk to him. He simply has no authority to negotiate except to offer maximalist right wing talking points.

(11,785 posts)making the argument that Boehner is so far down the road of tying a shutdown to defunding the ACA that Reid has to "give him something". She's not even asking him if he feels he should do that, she's telling him he should.

(7,403 posts)And Boehner as .... Fill in the blank. Worse, it shows that the Democrats have no one to talk to. Boehner keeps backing out on deals AND to think, the Republicans keep screaming that Obama won't negotiate. That was the sole message of Ted Cruz on Meet The Press last Sunday. The good news is that according to all recent polls, including Fox News, the American people are seeing through what is going on and they are abandoning the Republicans in droves.

(7,188 posts)Also the reply below that makes that point - there is no one to negotiate with - Reid tried to negotiate and Boehner reneged. How do you negotiate with that?

(9,612 posts)Send them a clean CR with Obama's preferred funding levels + 10%. Then we can "negotiate" down from that to an acceptable level.
