Shutdown Day 3: Food distributor stalled, charter boat captains docked
Source: Miami Herald
Harriette Wilson-Greene stood on the ramp of an enormous warehouse filled with food Thursday, overseeing Rafik Tillman as he tossed box after heavy box filled with turkey, chicken and ham into the back of an overloaded Chevy Tahoe.
The food, as it has been for the past five years, was headed to the Omega Power and Place Ministry in Liberty City, where 160 needy families each week depend on it....
The food supplied to her from Feeding South Florida in Pembroke Pines was the last shipment to the non-profit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture until the partial federal government shutdown ends....
The government shutdown even had folks in the Panhandle a little on edge. With Tropical Storm Karen bearing down and threatening to become a hurricane, the Florida National Guard announced half of its 2,000 full-time federal employees have been furloughed. It translates to valuable equipment that could be deployed during a storm not receiving proper maintenance....

(7,473 posts)When it comes to guns and bombs, no shortage there.
I volunteer for a charity that delivers food for needy, shut-ins, disabled. I will find out today how things are going. One of the volunteers has small children. She works 4 days a week to comply with the regulations for welfare help. including WIC.
This whole mess is beyond my comprehension.

(4,788 posts)I listened to WTOP, an all-news station here in DC. The morning news people were talking with Bob Schaeffer (sp?) about the shut down and one of the things he said was that the GOP has no idea of how to get out of the situation they've gotten themselves into. I know Schaeffer doesn't have the best of reputations here, but in this instance I think he's correct. Boehner claims he's not going to let a default happen, but he's too weak to prevent the reactionary members of his party from mucking it up.

(62,530 posts)they won't back down because if they do, they will look "weak" yet, if the allow the default to happen then they will be cheered on by the stupids. Who, in turn, don't want to back down because they believe they will look "weak".
It appears as if the choice for the repukes and the teabaggers is either to look weak or look stupid.
it appears that, for them, they chose stupid.
amazing.

(60,010 posts)From a financial point of view, it makes sense to stop the debt bubble, I understand that.
From a budgeting point of view, selling out citizens to keep the war machine going was a deliberate choice.
No matter what the point of view, sooner or later we have to hit the financial wall, but it is tragic that 99% of us will be harmed greatly by such a hit.

(8,360 posts)and..."The federal govt now claims the right to close Florida Bay to navigation? What, the charter boats compasses and GPS's won't work without a "park ranger" to turn them on or point out "north?" This fedzilla beast has grown into an out-of-control monster, and needs to be caged and put on a strict diet until it serves us, and not the other way around."
