Woman, 68, dragged nearly block by ATA bus

Source: KCTV5

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
A Shawnee woman is in critical condition after a bus struck her and dragged her nearly a block in downtown Kansas City Friday morning.

The 68-year-old woman suffered internal injuries, a broken leg and road rash.

A woman walking nearby with a child managed to pound on the bus to alert the driver about the woman underneath the vehicle.

"The only reason he stopped was because someone alerted him," said Sgt. Bill Mahoney of the Kansas City Police Department's traffic investigative unit.

He said the woman was apparently in the driver's blind spot and he didn't see her. He said investigators will examine video from the cameras mounted on the Area Transportation Authority bus.

This happened only a few blocks from where I work. Downtown KC is a mess now with construction projects going on all over the place. It's become a real challenge driving in and out of the area.

Hope she pulls through and has no memory of the event. I imagine the good samaritan, child and bus driver will all be traumatized by the event. Good vibes going out to all concerned.

The streets are narrow enough and traffic heavy enough without detours, construction zones and equipment. I suspect that's what happened in this case. The bus drivers are quite skilled and I'm constantly amazed at how they can navigate the turns. However, there's still noise and confusion and the one time when pedestrian and bus are in the wrong place and the wrong time.

As you said, "Good vibes..."
