Capitol Suspect Miriam Carey Believed Obama Electronically Monitored Her
Source: ABC
The woman who led police on a high-speed chase near the U.S. Capitol before being shot dead had a history of mental illness and believed President Obama was electronically monitoring her Connecticut home in order to broadcast her life on television, sources said.
Sources told ABC News that Connecticut police had twice in 2012 been called by Miriam Carey's boyfriend, who reported the woman was delusional, acting irrationally and putting her infant daughter in danger.
Carey, 34, a dental hygienist from Stamford, Conn., was killed by police Thursday after trying to ram a White House gate and leading cops on a chase down Pennsylvania Avenue with her 1-year-old daughter in the car. The toddler was uninjured and placed in police custody.
According to sources Carey believed she was the "prophet of Stamford" and was capable of communicating with Obama.

(111,261 posts)I've known three women who had it: two are dead and one is disfigured.
This is just a very sad situation. I doubt the police who opened fire had any choice, her car was the deadly weapon.
Divine Discontent
(21,056 posts)when I first heard that a lady had ran into the barrier at the WH, I thought, obsessed with the president? turns out Occam's Razor was right...
and my condolences if those women you knew of were friends/fam.

(111,261 posts)might have had something to do with that.
They're understandably jumpy about people who do things like that in our post 9/11 country.
They didn't know she was a young mother driven wacky by postpartum psychosis.

(26,291 posts)"Authorities are trying to trace Careys movements in Connecticut and Washington, where she apparently arrived only shortly before she approached a White House entrance and drove her car into a metal barricade just after 2 p.m. Thursday, then struck a uniformed Secret Service officer.
After speeding down Pennsylvania Avenue, she crashed at the Capitol grounds. Police scurried to carry the child to safety after her mother was shot several times."
But anyway a tragic ending regardless and one that might have been prevented if we had better mental healthcare in this country to provide care for such people.

(24,721 posts)I would assume that she was hospitalized both times, given medication, kept under observation until she, like many mental health patients, 'said what they wanted to hear' to get discharged -- which is fine with the hospital because resources for mental health care are being stripped to the bone by states governed by Republican demagogues.
And so it goes.

(7,358 posts)Another case of over zealous cops .. and they will be patted on the back as a job well done. Why was this woman killed? She was not armed .. they could have shot out her tires.

(3,962 posts)perfect knowledge did they?
First reports are usually incomplete & inaccurate - how many news sources reported she fired shots? Just look at the DU posts as an example.
What did police know and what did they not know?
In a town next to the Pentagon where terrorists used aircraft as a weapon, the biggest concern I'd have on the scene is whether the vehicle was packed with explosives that could be detonated as soon as the driver judged it was close enough to the White House or Capitol to be effective.
Tragic - you bet. Sufficient reason to change tactics should a similar incident recur? - not even remotely.

They didn't know that she didn't have a weapon and it may have raised red flags as a possible car bomb attempt

(22,651 posts)I don't think the police should have fired on her especially after she exited the car
Still there was a LONG chase then the car ringed by several police. someone saw her and the baby in the car. The car was a threat when surrounded by many police on foot.
When she hit the barrier why didn't the police car right behind her move up a couple feet and not let her back off the barrier?
