White House urges House to pass immigration reform

White House press secretary Jay Carney released a statement on Tuesday urging House Republicans to end the government shutdown and take up immigration reform.
More than 100 days ago, the Senate passed a strong bipartisan immigration reform bill that would reduce the deficit by over $800 billion and create jobs, Carney said. House Democrats introduced a similar bill last week. It is time for House Republicans to put politics aside and join Democrats to fix our broken immigration system and make the economy stronger.
The statement came after thousands rallied on the National Mall in support of immigration reform. Capitol Police arrested an estimated 200 protesters, including eight Democratic lawmakers over the demonstration.
The enthusiastic demonstration of support for immigration reform this week has proven to Congress that the broad coalition behind commonsense solutions to our nations broken immigration laws is as strong as it has ever been, Carney continued.

While the corporate media happily plays sounds bites of Republicans claiming that Democrats are not negotiating, the House GOP continues to sit on the bipartisan Senate immigration bill.
