Rep. C.W. Bill Young, 82, to retire

Young, 82, cited his health and wanted to spend more time with his family as factors for his retirement.

Young, who represents Florida's 13th district, including Pinellas County, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1971.

Young has been at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. since Friday with a back injury.

According to partner newspaper the Tampa Bay Times, Young said he plans to contact House Speaker John Boehner and give him the news.

This guy has been in Congress since 1970. This seat should go to the Democrats. It went for Obama twice.

And George W both times.

(But Obama was after the 2012 redistricting that reflects the current composition).

5. His congressional district went for Obama in 2008 under the old composition

and in 2012 under the current one. I guess what happened in 2012 is of the most importance but this is a Democratic District.

His margin was seven points it looks like. This is good news. It makes winning back the House that much easier.

I wish him well in his retirement and hope he is soon joined by other Republicans. The sooner the better.

got married, raised children, were hauled out on stretchers, etc.

He kept the country safe for the time his party could shutdown the government.

What a spectacular career.
