CIA to call back thousands of furloughed employees

Source: Washington Post

Unfortunately the info is behind a paywall, but to summarize from the paper version: CIA is in the process of immediately recalling employees at the National Counterterrorism Center, the Counterproliferation Center, and the Office of the National Counterintelligence Estimate. Thousands more may be called back over the next several days.

Now for the kicker. Last week, Senator Grassley (R-Idiotville) tore into DDNI James Clapper & by extension, DCIA John Brennan for... furloughing intelligence employees. Even though, by law, CIA and the other intel agencies are required to do so in event of a government shutdown, and even though Grassley is a member of the very party that forced the shutdown in the first place. Republican hypocrisy has reached levels of shamelessness never seen in human history.

In a statement issued Tuesday, CIA Director John Brennan said those being recalled were necessary to the CIA's core missions of foreign intelligence collection, analysis, covert action and counterintelligence.

Brennan didn't say just how many CIA workers were off the job, calling it a significant portion of the agency's workforce.

Brennan said keeping CIA staffing at the dramatically reduced levels of the past week would pose a threat to the safety of human life and the protection of property.

In the statement, Brennan said agency managers were determining exactly who would be recalled under revised staffing plans.

4-paragraph summary, please C&P to your post:

The CIA plans to begin calling thousands of furloughed employees back to work Wednesday, U.S. officials said, in an effort to contain the cumulative toll of a government shutdown stretching into its second week.

In a statement issued Tuesday to the CIA’s workforce, Director John Brennan cited concern about the “potential adverse cumulative and unseen impact on our national security” of furloughs that had forced employees across almost every category of the agency’s workforce to leave their jobs.

U.S. officials said that other intelligence agencies were taking similar steps but declined to disclose specifics on how many or which categories of employees would be summoned back to their jobs, citing the classified nature of their work.

Shawn Turner, a spokesman for Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr., said Clapper had authorized the recall of “some employees” at the National Counterterrorism Center, the National Counterproliferation Center, the Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive and the National Intelligence Council.
