Rand Paul: Tie Debt Ceiling To Raising Age For Social Security And Medicare

Source: BuzzFeed

Sen. Rand Paul said Sunday that Republicans making raising the Social Security retirement a condition of raising the debt ceiling, adding a new twist to the high-wire negotiations over re-opening the federal government and avoiding default.

“I am worried about a government that borrows over a million dollars every minute. And so I think there needs to be some structural reform of our spending or we shouldn’t raise the debt ceiling,” Paul told WABC’s Aaron Klein in an interview airing Sunday night, and shared with BuzzFeed. “And rising the age on social security gradually a couple months a year for younger people is a way to fix the imbalance. It ought to be done probably for Social Security and for Medicare.”

-snip-

In the interview, Paul accused President Barack Obama of using scare tactics to rattle financial markets as the deadline nears.

“The one thing we shouldn’t do is we shouldn’t scare people or scare the market place. So I think the president is wrong when he talks casually about default and thinks that we would default,” Paul said.

Back when we were discussing why the GOPigs were going crazy about October 1st.

That was one reason. And another was it made the goverment look good. The primary one was that it also helps people to register to vote.

No wonder they decided it was do or die to stop it. Because it doomed their nihilistic philosophy and they knew it.

This is a "Generated Labor" Tax. In order to maintain a stable marketplace with necessary demand Citizen subsidies must equal or exceed the value of "Generated Labor".

The debt ceiling is not about FUTURE debts. It is about paying for the debts the Congress and President have already approved.

While I can understand wanting to leverage this to try to reduce future expenditures and especially those that are mandated by law, this is not the way to approach it.

We need and should have a serious discussion about the future of Medicare and Social Security. There is a legitimate concern that with an aging population that is not being replaced at the same level, the ability to pay current level of benefits is going to become a challenge.

But we face some very difficult problems going forward. We need to find a way for a bridge where current younger workers begin to save more for their own retirement and that Obamacare becomes more the norm - everyone purchases insurance rather than having a defined benefit.

How that would work is a total unknown.

As well we have to understand that real wages are shrinking rapidly. So younger workers, unless they belong to the elite, are going to be making less and therefore unable to properly save for the future.

We really could solve a lot of problems by eliminating or either jacking it up to say $500,000. You see these are very wealthy folks we're talking about. They won't be relying on Social Security or Medicare to see them through to ultimate end. They've got money stashed away... dividends, investments. You get the picture. So they could care less. You almost never, never hear about this on MSM ..do you? Hmmm wonder why?

There needs to be a MAJOR correction starting in 2014. We need boots on the ground, volunteers calling, educating, becoming part of the solution.

I guarantee you, the GOP learned from watching OFA in 2012, we need to be very prepared. It is not too early to find your local democratic group and start to get involved. I had so much fun since 2008 doing this, being with people of like minds, all working joyfully toward a common goal.

Educate our youth, volunteer, learn about the issues both in Washington as well as locally. We make a difference, and we CAN change this course. It is up to us to make sure people do not forget the damage that the GOP has done and will continue to do to our country.

Shine on,

“People have crossed oceans and come on over full, leaky boats to get here and escaped tyranny around the world,” Paul said. “But they came for freedom and they also came and found prosperity. And that dream has to be alive. And I think that dream is what the Republican Party offers.”

“I think we can help those who can’t help themselves, but the whole boat will sink if everybody is receiving from the government,” he added.

The boat you cite is being steered by the Republicans in to an iceberg and you're telling the American People that only the most wealthy should have access to lifeboats.

And I would do this every time they make a demand. Just take an opposite stand as far on the other side as their demand is on their side.

83. Rand Paul is only 50.
Tue Oct 15, 2013, 04:26 AM
Oct 2013
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rand_Paul

Some people are capable of working hard at 70, but most aren't.

Somewhere between 63 and 70, people tire and while they may have better judgment than they did when they were younger, they probably won't be able to move as quickly as they did. Their memories start to fade just a bit. It's just a fact. Arthritis is a fact. Heart disease is a fact. Diabetes is a fact. Cancer is a fact. And the reason we have Medicare is that these difficult medical facts hit people over 65 more often than they do people who are younger.

Some people need to retire at 50.

And right now, there isn't a whole lot of demand for workers who are over 65. Social Security from age 65 is ideal. Even now, the age is something like 67, around that, and it is for many too late in life.

Get rid of the cap on Social Security taxes and tax capital gains at least of certain types or better yet, tax imported goods and profits from capital investments (if not already taxable as are 401(K) withdrawals at the same rate as earned income, and we could get our economy into good shape.
