Source: Reuters

>> (Reuters) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 hit the southern Philippines on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said there was no threat of a Pacific-wide tsunami after the quake.

The quake struck at a depth of about 35 km (22 miles) around Bohol island, to the north of Mindanao island. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

I was on the phone talking to someone from ebay.com a few minutes ago and suddenly a huge earthquake hit.

I advised the young woman that was panicking badly to get under a doorway and brace herself.

You could here all of this thumping and screaming and it went on and on and suddenly the line went dead!!

My god, I think it was India -- not sure; seems it was the Philippines, I stand corrected!

In any event, you could here the thumping, the shaking, etc. and wow, I hope where ever this was, that everyone there is safe.

I'm sure it will be on the news momentarily!!!

Stay safe people wherever you are!!!

YIKES.

Prayers for these people! Lots of them too!

I live in Southern California, and I know it is hard not to panic and run when a quake hits. I've been through a lot of them and was raised being told not to run outside, but damn it sure is the first reaction.

"The safest place to be in an earthquake is under a doorway. That's true only if you live in an unreinforced adobe home. In a modern structure the doorway is no stronger than the rest of the building. Actually, you're more likely to be hurt (by the door swinging wildly) in a doorway. And in a public building, you could be in danger from people trying to hurry outside. If you're inside, get under a table or desk and hang on to it."

Due to a lapse in Federal funding, the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program has suspended most of its operations. While the USGS will continue to monitor and report on earthquake activity, the accuracy or timeliness of some earthquake information products, as well as the availability or functionality of some web pages, could be affected by our reduced level of operation.

http://earthquake-report.com/2013/10/15/very-strong-earthquake-mindanao-philippines-on-october-15-2013/

New recalculated data from USGS are locating the epicenter in between Balilihan, Bohol and Sevilla. Also good news is that the depth of the hypocenter is at 57 km instead of the initially reported 33 km.

The initial theoretical injured / fatalities expectation was based on a focal depth of 33 km. It is now 57 km which will bring the number of fatalities down considerably. Another reason to decrease this number is the time of the morning that the earthquake struck. Most people were on the road or at least out of the houses..

Tue Oct 15, 2013, 08:53 AM
Oct 2013

Whenever you see 5, 10, or 33 km, assume they don't have enough data yet for a good estimate.

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/glossary.php

Glossary of Terms on EQ Maps

<snip>

Depth

The depth where the earthquake begins to rupture. This depth may be relative to mean sea-level or the average elevation of the seismic stations which provided arrival-time data for the earthquake location. The choice of reference depth is dependent on the method used to locate the earthquake. Sometimes when depth is poorly constrained by available seismic data, the location program will set the depth at a fixed value. For example, 33 km is often used as a default depth for earthquakes determined to be shallow, but whose depth is not satisfactorily determined by the data, whereas default depths of 5 or 10 km are often used in mid-continental areas and on mid-ocean ridges since earthquakes in these areas are usually shallower than 33 km.
