LINCOLN — A second Nebraska Republican will face competition in his bid for re-election to Congress next year.

Dennis Crawford, a Lincoln attorney and Democratic Party activist, announced Monday he will seek the 1st Congressional District seat now held by U.S. Rep. Jeff Fortenberry.

Crawford said he had been pondering a candidacy for a while. He has been the target of a Facebook campaign urging him to run.

He finally decided over the weekend to jump in.

Look, I agree that Republicans perpetrated a lot of gerrymandering in many states, but we have to stop this lazy habit of blaming gerrymandering for everything. Nebraska is basically a red state. All three of its districts are significantly more Republican than the national average. Romney carried all three of them.

Of course, even in a bright red state, it's good when Republicans get credible challengers. If nothing else, it will force the Republican Party to divert some resources to those districts. More important is that, with a few breaks, we might win some of those races. Here's hoping Nebraska adds at least one seat to that category.
