Shutdown: House Postpones Rules Committee Meeting
Source: c-span.org
On Tuesday, the fifteenth day of the government shutdown, a Senate plan for reopening the government and raising the debt ceiling appeared to be on hold when the House Republican leaders announced that they would proceed with their own alternative plan. However, Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (R-TX) confirmed that the Rules meeting and votes on the proposal would not take place tonight as scheduled.
President Obama met with members of the House Democratic Leadership. Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Congressmen Hoyer (D-MD), Clyburn (D-SC), Becerra (D-CA), Crowley (D-NY), Israel (D-NY) and Van Hollen (D-MD) attended the meeting. The members spoke to reporters following the meeting, reiterating their position on the debt ceiling and government shutdown.
During party lunches, Senators reportedly planned to discuss the current proposals to re-open the federal government and what to do about debt ceiling. However, neither party spoke to reporters at the end of the lunch meetings.
The Obama Administration has said that Thursday is when the Treasury Department will run out of its borrowing authority to fully pay the nation's bills if the debt ceiling is not increased.
