Booker defeats Lonegan in special U.S. Senate election
Source: NJ.com
Newark Mayor Cory Booker is the next senator from New Jersey.
The Associated Press has projected that Booker, a Democrat, will prevail over Republican Steve Lonegan, the former mayor of Bogota.
When the results are certified, Booker, 44, will become the first African-American ever elected to statewide office in New Jersey.
Booker was heavily favored to win the race from the beginning, but Lonegan gained in the polls late in the race. As the polls tightened, Booker became more aggressive and started highlighted Lonegans stridently conservative remarks, hoping theyd alienate New Jerseys traditionally Democratic voters.

(15,189 posts)That idiot will open his mouth too many times to be elected president, and not to eat. If he's the best the GOP has, he already lost. IMO. I'm just surprised even after these past weeks, the GOP got that many votes. This asshole tried to make oral sex illegal, and still got that many votes.

The GOP has gotten very good at forming circular firing squads.

There was even room in this victory for a backlash write-in. I heard a lot of people, including some who called in on radio, say they wrote-in Rush Holt.
Rush Holt would have been my choice, had he been on the ballot.

when he predicted that Obama would cave to the Tea-liban as soon as he won the N.J. election. He just didn't explain that it was a euphemism for "when Hell freezes over."

(7,403 posts)Is that the Tea Party really didn't pay for the government shutdown. Granted, special elections are not the best yardstick for measuring that but the polls barely budged from the start of the race.

(43,236 posts)Good to see a former mayor make Senator. Inner city issues and experience sorely lacking in the country club Senate, which most caters to big business, family business, estates, corporations. Perhaps because mayors have to be wheeler-dealers to get things done in their cities, I'm not sure he has my total trust, as if that means anything, but he's earned the right to make it happen for NJ. Growing and rehabbing inner cities should be a national priority instead of gobbling up scarce farmland for McMansions and Condoms. He has experience that is accretive to the Senate panoply.
