Men Got Us Into The Shutdown, Women Got Us Out

Senators John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) said on Wednesday afternoon that their female colleagues can take most of the credit for driving the compromise that is expected to temporarily reopen the U.S. government and raise the debt ceiling before Thursday's deadline.

"Leadership, I must fully admit, was provided primarily from women in the Senate," McCain said after the bipartisan deal was announced.

Back in the day, as one of the very few women in management, I used to think, during some contentious meetings that were all about showmanship and not about substance, that we should do the following.

Have all the men unzip their pants.
Measure each of their penises.
Determine who had the biggest one.
Acknowledge it.
AND MOVE ON!

Women are capable of doing that, too, of course, but the pattern does seem at least somewhat less hardwired into women.

In fact, when women act that way, I suspect it is often because they are trying to prove themselves by out-guying the guys in a predominantly male workspace.
