Unemployed Ohio woman charged for taking $2.87 from fountain to buy food

Source: NYdaily news

“The cop asked me what I was doing and I was afraid to tell him,” Romine told WBNS-10TV. “The money didn’t belong to anybody, so I just took it out of there.”

After the officer found the stolen change in her pocket, he issued her a summons to appear in court on a petty theft charge.
Will Zell launched an online donation drive to help Romine fight her case.

Will Zell launched an online donation drive to help Romine fight her case.

The unemployed woman said she’s been struggling to make ends meet and about to lose her apartment and now she’s worried that she’ll get locked up.

“I’m trying to feed myself and I’ve got four cats I’m raising and trying to feed them,” she said. “I might go to jail.”

There comes a time when the authorities need to realize that someone is not guilty when they are a victim of circumstance.

For $2.87 hundreds of taxpayer dollars will be wasted prosecuting this women. Who wins and who looses?

No one wins! The taxpayers and this poor women lose.

Just like those who say they shouldn't pay into a system they don't need so says Topol on Fiddler on the Roof. So I had Topol for 16 days in october. now I get Javert .. hows the bread. just had a really bad argument with my brother on going to hell and not caring for anyone and shutting the Government down and how Tea Party people (my brother owe their lives to Reagan. zzzz hello Reagan is more or less a conservadem except the socialist crap. Yeah we almost came to a fist fight today blaming each other for the shut down... oh great just like the Civil War. It's tearing families apart. Prosecutors/district attorneys do. That means not only was this cop an authoritarian fool with no judgment or understanding of the law, but it means that a prosecutor had to look at his report and agree with it and formally charge her with a crime. It's a well oiled machine of stupidity, pettiness and and pure meanness. I hope her PD has already demanded a jury trial.

I read comments from cops on other sites saying that they would not have ticketed the woman. Some said they would have given her a few bucks or that they would have bought her a meal.

It breaks my heart to see someone so desperate that they would go into a fountain to get a handful of coins so that they could buy something to eat. Where the hell are we????? I thought that we still lived in one of the richest countries in the world.

Yet the city is the one prosecuting her. Wow. Please let some common sense judge throw this out and award some attorney fees to the lawyer taking this case pro bono. How many times have we seen small children wade into fountains and pick up change (accidentally). Let's write them all tickets and run them through the juvenile system, or better yet, arrest their parents.

This is so many kinds of screwed up it boggles the mind.

I'm glad the community is stepping forward and supporting her, but sad that it takes this kind of notoriety for her to get the help she needed in the first place.
