UC Davis pepper-spraying cop gets $38K for disability claim

Last edited Wed Oct 23, 2013, 09:18 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: KXTV (ABC 10 Sacramento)

DAVIS, CA - Former UC Davis police Lt. John Pike has been awarded $38,056 for psychiatric injuries he claimed to have suffered following a 2011 campus pepper-spraying incident that drew worldwide criticism.

The university paid out a total of $1 million to 21 activists who Pike doused with pepper spray as they sat in peaceful protest in the university quad.

Pike, who was later fired, filed a workers' compensation claim saying he suffered depression and anxiety over the way he was treated in the wake of the incident.

A psychiatrist, who was agreed upon as an expert by both UC Davis and Pike's attorney, found Pike suffers from a "moderate" disability and is therefore entitled to workers' compensation benefits.

If I had disposable income, I'd hire a private investigator to tail this scumbag to his local watering hole to gather evidence of this guy bragging about his exploits against both these students and the college.

I guarantee you on more than one occasion, Pike has related this story to fellow law enforcement buddies with a fondness of his actions...

What a scam.

to defend against the claim he filed if it had gone to court.

It was a high profile incident and you have to believe that there's more than one scumbag lawyer who would gladly take it on contingency just for the publicity he would receive. So I'm sure they weighed the advantages of a settlement against a protracted legal proceeding and decided just to pay him off as the lesser of two evils.

Or is the awarding on such a claim made without any judgement about whether the "injured" employee was, in effect, following orders or way out of bounds?

I want my percentage of tax dollars that paid for that back!!!

He's disabled because of the way he was treated by whom? If it's worker's comp it has to be the way he was treated at work. So what happened? And how do you get worker's comp when you can't even perform your job properly to the tune of a $1mn dollar payout due to your incompetent behavior?

I know he got lambasted on the internet, but that's his personal problem.

I really don't believe that he deserves 80% of what each of those protesters got.

Okay, I originally mistakenly divided a million by 12, but now after dividing it by 21 and seeing how much he got compared to them I'm truly sickened.

If someone were to eat a bunch of poop, poop that poop out, eat that re-pooped poop, poop it all out again, put the re-re-pooped poop in a brown paper bag, place that bag on this guy's porch, light it on fire, ring the doorbell and then run away, I'd say that person had gone too far.

But still. Fuck this guy.
