Carolyn Maloney: Rush Limbaugh 'Slut' Comment Is Attempt To Silence Women
Source: Huffington Post
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) angrily walked out of a congressional hearing on the contraception coverage rule last month because the one female witness the Democrats brought, Sandra Fluke, was rejected by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) for being "unqualified" to speak on the topic.
But after hearing that conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh called Fluke, a Georgetown University law student, a "slut" and a "prostitute" on Wednesday night for advocating that employers cover birth control pills in their health plans, Maloney is really fuming.
"I am just aghast," she told The Huffington Post on Thursday. "If the far right can attack people like Sandra Fluke, women are going to be afraid to speak because they're going to be called terrible words. It's an attempt to silence people that are speaking out for women."
Maloney and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) had brought Fluke into the hallway outside the House Oversight Committee hearing on Feb. 16 to allow her to give her testimony to reporters while the all-male panel of religious experts testified on record. Fluke told the story of one of her classmates who lost an ovary because Georgetown, a Jesuit university, did not cover the oral contraceptives that she was prescribed for her condition.

(5,763 posts)So, they could reveal in court other things that come up, or threaten to, depending on if the judge thinks it's pertinent. Extortion becomes somewhat legal in defamation suits. That's why you have to be careful about exactly what statement and what smear you're suing over.
Did he call her a prostitute, too? I know he said "slut." With the latter, they could probably bring in everything about her sexual history.
With the former, they'd have to be more specific.
pnwmom
(108,980 posts)What he said was a deliberate attempt to slander her. Her testimony had NOTHING to do with her own sex life -- she spoke of three women she knew of who needed contraception: one Catholic mother, and two women with medical conditions who needed hormone regulation for non-contraceptive reasons.
As an attorney, she is probably not overly worried about what he might try to pull into court about her sex life. Any fair judge would rule that that was irrelevant.
I wish she would sue him.
caseymoz
(5,763 posts)Whether she sues him or not, Rush's career is not going to survive this one.
I, too, hope she sues him on top of it. Since she's an attorney, she can weigh it. I was just pointing out that it's probably not a sure win.

Best wishes.

(3,363 posts)Libel deal with the written word, and as I understand it -- even though these words were spoken (slander) on the radio -- it's libel if they were being READ on the radio. In other words, they were 'typed' before spoken.
I am not sure what the difference will mean.
As for those further scare tactics of this woman's sexual history being made public -- I'm not so sure about that at all. Plenty of tabloids and such have been successfully sued by celebrities.

(1,412 posts)Imagine if all liberals, Dems and progressives completely ignored him. Where would his ratings go, down the tubes. He would only have his ditto heads to talk to. As long as he is getting the attention, positive or negative, his sponsors and paymasters will continue to pay him big $$$. It's all about ratings.
I remember how effective was the eerie silence of the protesters when Chancellor Katehi took the long, long walk to her car.
When I look at Rush, I see a bloated, red faced, drug dependent blow-heart What does he have.. a drawer full of Oxy and loads of Viagra, and probably pays lots of $$$ just to get a good lay! Worse, he has to look at that face and body every day in the mirror. I think he will be doing double duty venom now that Breitbart is no longer with us.

(34,136 posts)And look where it's gotten us. Now that he has offended most women in this country and men who have women in their lives that they respect, it's a good time to try to get Limbaugh off the air and out of the nation's political discourse.
If we can force him off the public airways maybe he'd move to one of the subscription services and that would kill his program. His fans aren't going to pay to listen to him so he'd finally fade away.
Of course, I would not shed a tear if he went the way Breitbart did.

Have any conservative/republican women pundits or politician condemned that yet? If so, I haven't seen or heard. Which means that the intimidation--or the threat of intimidation--is so profound that they dare not speak out for their own gender against this vicious pig. That's saying a lot, considering I'll bet the whole lot of them are on birth control.
that asshole puffs up the bullies amongst his listeners to then go out and intimidate the women in their lives over something that benefits them, too. The alternative is to not have sex--and they will chew their right arm off before going without.
Every single woman on capitol hill, as well as those parked in front of studio cameras every day should have been one voice in condemning limpfuck, not just liberal/progressive/Democratic women.

Right wing radio has definitely passed the point of merely "freedom of speech". This isn't simply a matter of speech some of us don't like, this is speech that actively works to destroy people whose speech it does not approve of.

Rush was on a twisted tirade about birth control, saying that women who need subsidized birth control are.....well he wouldn't come right out and say it, but he did say that they were having so much sex that it was causing them financial problems. Oh, and he said that feminists who want "free" birth control should have to post sex videos on the internet. But Rush is a kidder, you know. It was all in good fun.

(5,763 posts)has the least credibility to insult anyone for being sexually active. Man, woman, pornstar, prostitute. I don't care. He's shown his sex life at the time depended on somebody else's generous sex drive.

(7,570 posts)Palm Beach has plenty of gorgeous, high-dollar whores who could service Rushbo, if he were into that. Maggots like Limbaugh only go to the Dominican Republic for things that they CAN'T get here.
caseymoz
(5,763 posts)First of all, plenty of guys who won't see adult prostitutes in their own home city/country will see them when traveling. Ever hear the expression, "What happens in Vegas. . . ?" It applies to other destinations, foreign and domestic. There are reasons for it: clients don't want their paid mistress near their normal life, especially if the client is famous and the prostitute can cause real trouble and embarrassment. It would be hard for any prostitute, no matter how ethical, to keep quite about seeing Limbaugh. Then there's the random chance of just getting caught if you're in the public eye and have any enemies. Plus, and this applies to everything, when people are removed from the discipline of their normal culture and peer groups, they tend to act differently.
About your point that the Dominican Republic is "noted" for for sex trade in young boys. Like other places so noted, it would also be known for adult prostitution. Like those other places, the market for young boys would not be larger than the one for adults. I'll give an analogy to show you what the problem is with your assumptions: fingerprints are found at murder scenes, but if you find a fingerprint, that doesn't mean there's been a murder. Furthermore, if you have a murder scene, that doesn't prove all that ever happens there is murder, even if Al Capone visited.
I don't know really much about the pederast personality, so I don't know if Rush fits it. Even so, I couldn't despise the guy much more already, but I shouldn't feed my hatred unwarranted conclusions. Especially when the warranted ones tell me enough.

He can disagree with Ms. Fluke if he wants. He's entitled to his antiquated opinions. It is still out of line to call her a "slut" or a "prostitute" for her views.
