Washington — The United Auto Workers and other unions will push to get a measure on the November ballot in Michigan to prevent "right to work" advocates from changing the state's labor laws, the UAW said Thursday.

UAW President Bob King said that a coalition of unions had agreed to move forward with an effort to change the state's constitution to bar "right to work" at a meeting of union presidents in Washington on Wednesday.

"In that meeting, we got consensus," King told more than 1,000 UAW members and retirees. "The UAW has been out in front advocating for in Michigan that we do a ballot initiative to change the Michigan constitution — to protect workers against corporations and guarantee workers' right to collective bargaining."

"This is going to be a major undertaking," King said, saying unions planned to collect 500,000 signatures — about double the number that are required by law — in order to get the measure on the ballot.
