Rep. Speier calls for boycott of Limbaugh sponsors
By Eric W. Dolan
Thursday, March 1, 2012 16:25 EST
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA) on Thursday said that if the sponsors of Rush Limbaughs radio show continued to support his hate mongering then women should boycott those companies.
I rise this morning to say to Rush Limbaugh, shame on you, she said on the House floor. Shame on you for being the hatemonger that you are. Shame on you for being misogynistic.
Limbaugh on Wednesday called Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke a prostitute and a slut because of her testimony in Congress about contraception.
- snip -
So I say to the women in this country, do something about this, she continued. I say to the women of this country, ask Century 21, Quicken Loans, Legal Zoom, and Sleep Number to stop supporting the hate mongering of Rush Limbaugh and if they do not do that, then I ask them to boycott those companies.

We used pressure on advertisers to get Glenn Beck out of mainstream media, why can't we do it with Rush?
Here is a list of Limbaugh sponsors current as of Jan. 2011 (It may include some companies who are no longer sponsors. I Googled and couldn't find a more recent one.): http://www.democraticunderground.com/1002369972 (h/t trueblue2007)

Glad I have an accountant and dont use Quicken/Turbotax...but I reccommend anyone who does, find an alternative as you get ready to do your taxes. They exist...but it would send a loud message to Quicken if people wrote them and said no more.

(5,214 posts)Granted this is for Columbus OH, but there are a lot of LOCAL advertisers also;
Dear Sirs,
I heard Rush Limbaughs recent radio show featuring his comments regarding Susan Flukes brave testimony regarding her statements before Congress. I went to the local radio stations website, www.610WTVN.com, in order to determine if your station did in fact allow this commentator to make these vile statements. I will not repeat what Mr. Limbaugh said on this occasion because my household does not use that type of language.
This has not been the only vile statements Mr. Limbaugh has been associated with; he ridiculed Michael J, Foxs debilitating condition, he ridiculed Hu Jintao, the Chinese President, He was speaking (President Hu Jintao) and they weren't translating. They normally translate every couple of words. Hu Jintao was just going ching chong, ching chong cha"Hu Jintao--He was speaking and they weren't translating. They normally translate every couple of words. Hu Jintao was just going ching chong, ching chong cha," Mr. Limbaugh said.," and used racial overtones in describing Donavan Mcnabb, "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well,'' Mr. Limbaugh said at the time. "There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team." This last remark is said to have lost Mr. Limbaugh his chance to own an NFL team.
Any one of these remarks should have gotten Mr. Limbaugh a public rebuke, if not from WTVN, but from Clear Channel, the parent company which distributes Mr. Limbaughs show. As far as I know, no formal apology has been forthcoming from him.
I have written to the following advertisers below. I have included the facts included in this letter and have asked each and every advertiser to reconsider advertising on Mr. Limbaughs show.

I sincerely hope you do reconsider what shows, radio stations you spend your advertising dollars with. While I do not personally listen to the radio station, because of the hatred Mr. Limbaugh in particular but other commentators as well spouts on a daily basis, I have friends who listen to the commentators on your station. I will try hard to convince them to reconsider their choice of radio stations.
I also sent the following letter to the local station, get this, a CLEAR CHANNEL owned outlet:

These were the advertisers I was able to locate in a cursory search on your website. I admit I do not listen to your station because Clear Channel, and mostly Mr. Limbaugh, are a big part of the station. I do know people who do listen and I will tell them of this current controversy and hopefully they will rethink their choice of radio stations.
I understand you are required to put this and any letter in the Public Inspection File. I trust you will do the same to my letter."
Notice the highlighted sentence. I got this helpful hint from another poster. Seems they are required to put this in to Public Inspection File. That same post also recommended sending the letter registered so the station could not say they 'never received it.'

(65,408 posts)good reason why RW spew should be on there unchallenged. Propaganda does work, and our troops are being relentlessly propagandized from one side--and a particularly nasty form of that, to boot. Since they won't allow even mild counter-programming, Rush should not be on there.

(13,200 posts)As the focus of tar and feathers shifted from informers to loyalists, the practice became more violent. In 1775, a physician named Abner Beebe was blistered by the hot tar poured upon him. The mob then "carried [him] to an Hog Sty & rubbed [him] over with Hogs [sic] Dung. They threw the Hog's Dung in his Face, & rammed some of it down his Throat." 6) In 1776, a Charleston mob committed a even grizzlier execution. According to the local paper:
John Roberts, a dissenting minister, was seized on suspicion of being an enemy to the rights of America, when he was tarred and feathered; after which, the populace, whose fury could not be appeased, erected a gibbet on which they hanged him, and afterwards made a bonfire, in which Roberts, together with the gibbet, was consumed to ashes

I will not purchase products from your company, and if any of my acquiantances or family have, or intend to, I am asking them to join this boycott. If you are employers or sponsor this hatemonger in any nature or form, I will boycott your radio stations (which will therefore boycott your advertisers) or other media forms.
Through your sponsorship of Rush Limbaugh you are supporting his degrading and disrespectful comments towards women. He has finally crossed a line that is unforgiveable. If in the future, you should choose to remove your sponsorship, I will once again consider your brand a good one to deal with.
Today he referred to a young woman who testified before congress as a slut and that she should post videos of herself having sex on the web if taxpayers paid for Birth control. If this is the kind of programming that you sponsor, I want NOTHING to do with you.

(32,034 posts)Could some stations would replace Limbaugh with Big Eddie? (Thom Hartmann is moving to the 3-6pm ET timeslot in a week or two, so Ed Schultz is the one smart alternative in Limbaugh's 12-3pm ET time slot in the near future). Good on Speier! Proud to live near (not in) her district.
In fact, many areas in the US can receive up to 4 stations carrying Rush at once, usually the local affiliate and a few distant ones (given how AM signals at a certain power level can reach a larger areas than FM signals). For instance in my hometown if I'm tuning on my AM radio, Limbaugh is locally on San Francisco affiliate KKSF 910 as well as out-of-market stations KSCO 1080 (Santa Cruz), KMJ 580 (Fresno), and KFBK 1530 (Sacramento). Similarly, I noticed that in the Cleveland area Limbaugh can be heard on TWO local stations - WHLO in Akron and WTAM in Cleveland, as well as distant ones WKBN Youngstown and WJR Detroit. And while Limbaugh gets the luxury of 1000+ stations nationwide even on multiple frequencies in some areas, someone like Thom Hartmann can be heard only in the most (D)-voting areas of the nation and in those areas only one station per area? (Exception: The area around Bellingham, Wash. and Vancouver, B.C., Canada can hear Thom on both KBAI Bellingham and KPTK Seattle.) We the People need to take back our airwaves and make the radio stations serve the public interest once again.

I have always been disappointed in Raplh Nader because at one time, he had the power to organize consumers and he didn't. We have a better chance, at this point, fighting corporate control of this country by organizing comsumers than we do with organized labor.

Actually, I am probably like a lot of people who rant and rave in the privacy their own space, but who long to find a way to voice their rage but don't have any idea how to make a difference. Help us get involved.
I am ready for an all out boycott of anyone and everyone even slightly connected. I appreciate the list of sponsors that has been published and I will contact each and every one, but I plan to drill down on the local level. I have been looking locally and, while it seems extremely difficult, l plan on mapping out at the local level all businesses that can be linked to from his site. Not "knowing" where your advertising $$ goes is no longer an excuse.
I am pretty new at this so any advice would certainly be appreciated. I guess I am tired of being part of the silent majority.
