Crystal Mangum found guilty of 2nd-degree murder
Source: Durham News Observer
DURHAM A jury found Crystal Mangum guilty of second-degree murder Friday in the stabbing death of her boyfriend, Reginald Daye, in 2011.
Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway sentenced Mangum to a minimum of 14 years and two months to a maximum of 18 years in prison.
Deputies immediately led Mangum out of the courtroom in handcuffs following the announcement of her sentence.
Mangum, 35, stabbed Daye, 46, in the side of his chest on April 3, 2011 during a fight at Daye's apartment. Daye died 10 days later at Duke Hospital from complications from the wound.
Mangum claimed she stabbed Daye in self defense after she fled to the bathroom and he dragged her out by the hair, but Daye told investigators before he died that Mangum attacked him several times with knives before stabbing him in the chest

She is the person who accused the Duke lacrosse players of rape a couple of years ago.

(109,001 posts)Meier also filed a motion to keep witnesses from testifying about an incident in 2010 in which Mangum threw her then-boyfriends clothes in the bathtub and set them on fire while her children and two police officers were in the home.
She was charged with arson and other lesser crimes, but a jury could not reach a verdict on the arson charge, which was the most serious of the charges. It did, however, find her guilty of some of the lesser charges associated with the case.
Franks said she does plan to introduce evidence from that incident during the murder trial.
She came running down the hallway screaming, Im going to stab you! Im going to kill you! Franks said. She practically bulldozed an officer and had to be taken down.

Ranchemp.
(1,991 posts)that story was a total fabrication and pushed by the prosecutor, Mike Nifong, who was disbarred because of his conduct during the investigation of the charges.

(16,232 posts)And I don't doubt that she was sexually assaulted. She may have been paid for it. May have participated in it. Maybe decided to profit from it and stretched the truth to some degree. (And fwiw, every damn word could have been absolutely true and the result would have been the same. Money and power talk - loudly. I lived there. Duke is sacrosant and those boys heirs to fortunes you and I will never ever know. And also, fwiw - I knew the private investigator on that case - a former Durham police officer - and, well - let's just say not everything she said was a lie.)
But the real point is - she was damaged before she walked in that door.
Have you ever stopped to wonder why that might be?

(12,778 posts)That's a perfect description of Crystal Mangum. Though she may not be technically labeled as a sociopath, she has many sociopathic tendencies.
I actually think that most of her supporters are worse. They know how bad she is but still support her because of their own agendas.
Unfortunately, this woman will eventually get out of prison and will undoubtedly ruin more lives.
mzteris
(16,232 posts)My only "agenda"- if that's what you want to call it - is trying to bring awareness thate extreme damage to individuals affect those around them, and thus society.
It's probably too much to ask for the cessation of all horrific behavior, but if those who suffered from it were to receive treatment, then maybe the cycle could stop for that chain. Violence begets violence. Abuse most of creates abusers. Self-treating mental health issues with street drugs exacerbates all of it. Street drugs, you say? Well, no money, no healthcare, no doctors, no prescribed and monitored medication that the privileged enjoy.
Most sociopaths are made, not born.
NaturalHigh
(12,778 posts)I wasn't talking about you. I was talking about the people who continued to support her and want the Duke players strung up even when it was clear that she was lying. The posts on DU at the time were pretty horrific.
"Most sociopaths are made, not born."
We agree on that point at least. Unfortunately, treatment really doesn't help sociopaths substantially. The absolute best that it can do for them is teach them that destructive behavior is not in their best interests. Since they have no remorse (and I have never seen anyone more remorseless than Crystal Mangum and her supporters), they don't care how their actions hurt other people.

(12,778 posts)No, not at all. She killed a man. She tried to send other men to prison by falsely accusing them of rape. At this point, I don't care what her issues are. I just hope they keep her in prison for the entirety of her term and then be ready to clean up the mess when she eventually gets out and commits another violent crime.
mzteris
(16,232 posts)Of you that hopes she might treatment and counseling so she doesn't commit anymore violent crimes.
NaturalHigh
(12,778 posts)that this woman will inevitably do. I'm a realist, though. She has been a very bad person for a long time, and she isn't likely to change. At some point, damage control has to be the priority for the good of society.
mzteris
(16,232 posts)Do you never give a thought to the circumstances that got her to that point?
That's all, not apologizing for her, excusing her, advocating for her.
Just bringing up the topic of cause and effect.
NaturalHigh
(12,778 posts)No. Whatever might have traumatized her at some point in her life had nothing to do with the multiple people that she has victimized.
mzteris
(16,232 posts)That trauma created her. Changed her. Made her into that sociopath. Victimization is all she knows. Be one or create one.
I know you understand that.
NaturalHigh
(12,778 posts)I just don't understand how that would change anything about this case or her crimes.
mzteris
(16,232 posts)Never said it did.
I was asking if people understood from whence it sprang, and that the behaviour of individuals have long, and far-reaching consequences.

(13,324 posts)Was she sexually assaulted, or otherwise mistreated, by the Duke lacrosse players? I don't know. They were acquitted, but there were also no doubt powerful influences working toward said acquittal, whether they did what they were accused of or not.
But in this case, any abuse or trauma she may have suffered in her life is largely irrelevant. Why? Because she took a human life, that's why.

The case was dismissed. The players were declared innocent. Not just "not guilty," but "innocent."
