Three people dead after Sao Paulo stadium that will host football World Cup opener collapses

Source: Mirror

A section of the £300million stadium that will host the football World Cup opener in Brazil has collapsed killing three people.

A crane collapsed this afternoon and fell onto the construction site of the 68,000-seater Sao Paulo Arena, destroying parts of the stands.

Local military police say the soil beneath it gave way. Although three people were killed, the accident happened at lunchtime meaning fewer construction workers were in the area when the collapse occurred.

The crane was putting the final truss of the east stand into place.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said on Twitter: "I'm deeply saddened by the tragic death of workers @corinthians arena today. Our heartfealt condolences are with the families."

Although crane collapses happen everywhere (remember when there was a flury in the US a few years ago), this is something that Brazil doesn't need. They're behind schedule and this is only going to make things worse.

I really hope Brazil hasn't bitten off more than it can chew with the World Cup.

People say that about every one of those events and yet the venues are always ready.

But with Fifa's end-of-year deadline looming, several stadiums are well behind schedule and one host city, Cuiaba, has told the BBC that not only will be it unable to finish its stadium on time, but there are not even enough hotel rooms for visiting fans.
...
Still a huge building site, this is another arena built with public money in a remote part of Brazil.

But with no pitch, no seats and no roof, this gamble to use the World Cup as a beacon for development may have backfired.

Local officials have now admitted to the BBC that they will not make the deadline.

what is up with soccer anyway ? In no other sport do we have this non sense. They building the giant vagina stadium in Dibai for some other 'world cup'. I dont get these soccer people but I suppose its better that we are building hundreds of giant stadiums for soccer than bombing some middle eastern cou....oh we are still doing that too.
I dont like soccer.I dont like hockey, I dont like anything where people skate, ride, drive or fly.
We need more baseball, and less soccer.
