Sneaking up behind people, strangling them with piano wire? Or perhaps a game like Mass Effect 2, where you can blast wicked aliens with missile launchers. Then of course there's games like Skyrim, where you can slay dragons, vampires, werewolves, and even people.

The thing is, most of us have minds that can separate the reality from the fiction. These games, perhaps, appeal to some because it allows for doing things in a fictional sense that we would never imagine doing in real life. Perhaps in rare instances, some people lose touch with reality and think that what is fun in a video game, might be fun in real life. I don't think that in this instance we can point the blame at the video games, because, they're simply games. Take a Chess game for instance, you take down pawns, bishops, even a Queen - and having known many chess players, I can say that some of them do this with sadistic glee and wicked grins. This doesn't mean they're going to go out and find a bishop to take down in real life.

My questions would be more... what kind of backgrounds did they have? How were they raised by their parents or guardians? Were they suffering from mental illness? If so, had they had access to treatment?

All of these questions aside, some people are simply cruel, sadistic, cold. Some people truly take delight in the suffering of others - and these individuals ought to be (IMHO) judged as individuals, not as the result of a violent video game or some inane rant on the radio. If we are all simply too impressionable and too stupid to be permitted to play violent games or listen to the hatred of the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Howie Carr, then perhaps we are too stupid to be permitted to drive, or vote, or even feed ourselves.

It's certainly over the top - but this is a sick couple, an "evil" (for want of a better word) couple of individuals, and I don't think we can realistically say their actions had anything to do with video games or hateful radio. Otherwise, we'd have a hell of a lot more murders in the US - think about how many dittoheads are out there listening to Rush every day, or how many play violent video games all day long...

Why not ask what brand of clothes they wear, or the cereal they eat? It's just as likely that those had anything to do with it as music and video games.

You have to compare them to the amount of people who listen to music and play video games and DON"T kill other people. The people in Canada and the UK play the same video games and listen to the same music and they don't have the issues the US has.

The games are not the problem. It's US culture.

Asking people who commit violence if they play video games, and then determining that the games cause violence, is like going into a prison and asking the prisoners if they have ever drank milk and then, when they all say yes, coming to the conclusion that milk drinking causes criminal behavior. How many people drink milk and DON'T commit crimes?

I'm sure there are some examples of mental illness, but people like this are not one of them.
The way some are raised, they just dont care about anybody but themselves. Look at that stupid 'knockout game" going on. My dad would have my ass in a sling if I was ever caught being involved with something like that.

How many movies are released each year where killing someone is the happy ending? Millions of people digest the fantasy harmlessly.
But there are people who learn to understand violence in a different way. I think the idea is that when a person identifies with the most violent elements of our culture, movies and games may aggravate that condition.
It is not a simplistic cause and effect argument that people deride. The argument is that when someone has violent tendencies, they are attracted to violent fantasy material. And, there may be a possibility that there may be a time when the fantasy isn't enough.

'Thrill kill' murderer granted early release in RI
Inmate serves 13 years of 35-year sentence

...According to a graphic description of the crime, Girard left the vehicle to relieve himself when the three arrived at George Washington Park in Burrillville. Brissette then demanded Descoteaux have sex with him in exchange for cocaine.

"After that, Brissette reached into the back of the Blazer for a plastic bag containing a lug wrench and smashed it into Jeanette's head," according to court records. "Jeanette was stunned and asked Brissette what he was doing, to which he responded by again striking her head with the lug wrench."

The victim screamed begging Brissette to stop, at which point Girard returned, according to police records quoted in the court documents. Descoteaux promised she wouldn't tell anyone what had happened if they drove her to the hospital.

"In the meantime, Brissette, who had been rummaging about in the Blazer, reappeared and handed the shovel to Girard and directed him to dig a hole," court documents state. "Suddenly realizing the implications of what was happening, the wounded and bleeding Jeanette sprang to her feet and began to run for her life."

I was in Texas in the years when the moratorium on the death penalty went into effect and when it was reinstated. The reason was overcrowding which was rightly deemed unConstitutional under cruel and unusual punishment.

The obvious solution was to fund properly and make wise choices in releases. There are truly dangerous people being incarcerated, but most of the rest could be rehabilitated; or sent into diversion programs with mental health and or drug treatment to help them no reoffend for those reasons; also job skills. Many of these folks do not even high school diplomas, making chances of honest employment very low.

But despite the danger, the most dangerous were released to 'reduce overcrowding' and serial rapists and murderers were getting out after having done 'good time.'

First day out of prison, they showed the public their idea of having a 'good time.' They robbed, raped, kidnapped and killed until caught. I think it was done to make the system look 'liberal and soft on crime' and Texas has never looked back since.

Now the public will have to look over their shoulders for this couple, pictures at link:

http://www.dailyitem.com/breakingnews/x853087346/SECOND-ARREST-IN-WORKS

Sure they'll find a reason to let them out. In countries that the death penalty is legal, it is often wrongfully and unfairly applied. We say we don't want it, but people don't want to pay taxes to keep killers in prison. They'll get out, maybe even get a light sentence.

I can't help but think that the cocaine addicted woman in the story you posted, weighed against putting that fine pair of gentlemen *cough, cough* getting a life sentence without parole. They never should be let go, and his reasoning that he finally did her in to spare her more pain, does not account for the planning and then the killing in order to escape prison. That's not insanity or manslaugher or even heat of the moment killing, that is premeditation

Both these cases and so many more are disgusting. Moreso that we have the Nordquists of the USA to thank for it. 'Starve the beast,' for that's what they call the government who dares regulate anything. And they'd let the predators roam free to act like beasts.

I felt all along that it was and is a plan to destabilize society to make the government look useless; the right never lets up on that scheme.

Their plan is not to liberate us from fantastic government wrongdoing; they want to herd us into their private system whereby there is no transparency, not by mistake or overbearing, but instrinsic to the corporatist model.

As Noam Chomsky said:

The most effective way to restrict democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: kings and princes, priestly castes, military juntas, party dictatorships, or modern corporations.

That's what they want, a theocratic, corporatist society that stops resistance from the ground up. They are doing it state by state with ALEC laws.

And the gun manufacturers make a mint off these stories. Vigilantism is not far away when the public keeps seeing this kind of thing happen.

JMHO.

From today's N&O:

....

Elytte Barbour, 22, and Miranda Barbour, 18, face criminal homicide charges in LaFerrara's death. His body was found Nov. 12 in an alley in Sunbury, a small city about 100 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The couple had recently moved to nearby Selinsgrove from Dunn, N.C.

....

Following his wife's arrest, Elytte Barbour told The Daily Item of Sunbury that Miranda Barbour, whom he married Oct. 22, regularly hired herself out as a "companion" to men she met on various websites, a business venture he said he supported because it didn't involve sexual contact.

Barbour said his wife made anywhere from $50 to $850 by meeting with men for such activities as having dinner together or walking around a mall. The ads she placed on websites including Craigslist all said upfront that sex was not part of the deal, he said.

"She is not a prostitute," he said. "What she does is meet men who have broken marriages or have no one in their lives, and she meets with them and has delightful conversation."

....
