Westboro Baptists ‘booking flights’ for Johannesburg to protest Mandela’s funeral

Source: THE RAW STORY

The Westboro Baptist Church has a long history of media-soliciting domestic and international hate protests, with pickets targeting the funerals of dead children at Sandy Hook, fallen soldiers and celebrities like Paul Walker drawing outsized attention.

Their next dive into the fray is a triple-gainer by their historical standards, though — a protest of Nelson Mandela’s funeral. In South Africa.

In a series of deliberately-provocative Twitter posts, the church says it is buying plane tickets to South Africa and is hoping to coordinate with South African police while they stage a protest at the funeral, citing Mandela’s divorce and remarriage as evidence of damnation.

As most of the world - even if they do have "free speech" they do have limits to the use - not as in the US, where insanity prevail - and sanity are in short suply...

If they do this - travel to South Africa, and try to pick the funeral of Mr Nelson Mandela - the former President of South Africa - they might found out the hard way - that the rest of the World might as well not accept that type of bahavour.... They are not in the US where it seen like the more insane you act - the better it is... And you have the _right" to pick others funeral to show off your bigotry and hatred..

Why do you do this with every post I've ever seen of yours? Seems so redundantly unnecessary and a silly waste of your time. I suspect they will understand - it is LIMITS to how they can treat others if they was ever to leave the US... In South Africa - as most country's do have some limits to "free speech" and I guess trying to disturb the funeral of Nelson Mandela would be seen as a affront to South Africa in general.... I doubt South Africa also have some "1th admedment" as they have it in US - and I have the feeling if they want to play it the same way as they do it in the US, they might discover that others tend to be more fysical than in the US..

The big questioning would be, if they was allowed to visit South Africa at all - I suspect it is no waiver agreement between South Africa and US - so they have to do some paperwork at the South African Embassy - or the nearest consulate.. And I guess (I hope at least) members of the Wesboro Baptist Church are on some list - and the person would be denied aces to South Africa...

But then again - I guess they would not travel to South Africa at all - just smoke and mirror to make some noise...

They planned to disrupt the funeral of a murdered man, but the government tried to keep them out, although some of them snuck in:

Church members enter Canada, aiming to picket bus victim's funeral

"We're not going to allow these people to compound the tragedy of the McLean family loss, and Canadians simply won't tolerate these lunatics disrupting what should be a respectful service," he told CBC News on Friday.

"Your freedom to swing your arm in the air ends when it touches the end of my nose," he added. "What these people were going to do was hurtful, harmful and disruptive to the peace, order and good government that we guarantee to our citizens, so they have no place in this country."

AFAIK, here is part of their little hate group in a public park. I found it on the net, but didn't save the link:

Yes, the First Amendment has been abused terribly. It may be due to the idea that we are supposed to be rebelling against everything, even what is good. There comes a point when one is rebellling against one's best interests. And no respect for anyone else, to cause enmity that doesn't work in the long run.

The Westboro Baptist Church are lawyers, most of them, and have taken advantage of the First Amendment's shield on political and relgious rights. The 1stA no longer serving its purpose to inform people to make good choices in voting, interacting with others or making informed choices in other areas of life.

It's more about propaganda or making money, as this group specializes in lawsuits.

...WBC founder Fred Phelps is — perhaps surprisingly — a veteran of the civil rights movement, but the group’s more offensive picket signs and statements may run afoul of South Africa’s limitations on free speech.

The 1996 constitution contains more protection for free speech in law and practice than most countries in Africa, but “advocacy of hatred that is based on race, ethnicity, gender or religion, and that constitutes incitement to cause harm” is not protected.

And if the early Twitter reaction to the WBC announcement is any indication, incitement may already be happening...

They expect some liberalism to protect them there... But what is likely going to be a day of mourning will happen on the 15th and be heavily attended. This group would definitely be incitement of the mourners, IMHO.

…they don't go. They haven't showed up at most of the funerals they claim they're going to recently. Mostly they just SAY they will to get people riled up. And it could very well be that the government of SA knows enough about them not to let them in…wouldn't that be pretty!

Sun Dec 8, 2013, 01:48 AM

your post.

I once lived in a rural place where there were lots of wild turkeys. Very early one morning I woke to a strange noise outside the house so I got up to see what it was... there were about 50 or 60 turkeys all circled around my vehicle in the driveway in a very tight group. On the outer edge of the group there were about seven or eight of them constantly announcing that something was going on and it was upsetting. Then I noticed the six Toms that roosted in my trees strutting around all puffed up outside the circle. They would come close to the group and one would set out his wings a bit and say "ooobalooobaloooble!" and the whole crowd would just go off like a screeching gossip competition on steroids as if they were all screaming "OMG!! Did you hear that!? OOOHHHH!" all at once. After a minute they would settle down as the Toms had singled out one of the crowd and herded them off a ways while the "callers" at the edge of the circle would keep announcing the event. And five minutes later the whole thing would start all over again. This went on for a couple hours.

That's what the WBC and the public response to their threats to show up somewhere and protest reminds me of!

Their trying anything there would not end well. In fact, their trying anything like they get away with in the US would end badly for them anywhere else in the world, not so much because their so-called freedom of speech would be under threat but because they are simply badly-behaved idiots and bullies with no sense of conscience, timing or place except inside their own narrow-minded bubbles of hatred.

But they won't go. They are cowards to the core.

If they go, I think the usual "contact the nearest American consulate" advice in case of trouble abroad will not result in much help this time.

Imagine the dialog: "American Consulate? HELP! We're being attacked by an angry mob with clubs and machetes!"

Consulate operator:"What is your location?"

Caller: "We're at the Mandela funeral!"

Consulate Operator:"Who is 'we'?"

Caller: "We're with the Westboro Baptist Church!"

Consulate Operator: "I'll put you through to the right extension immediately."

"Caller: "Please hurry! They look like they want to tear us apart!"

*click!*

Recorded voice: "This is the office of special services of the United
States Consulate in Johannesburg. Please select from the
following five options: For loss of passport, press 1. If you have a medical
emergency, press 2. If you have had a vehicular incident and need
emergency transportation, press 3. If you are in need of legal
representation, press 4. If you are a member of the Westboro Baptist
Church protesting at Nelson Mandela's funeral, press 5, record your last
words at the tone, bend over, and kiss your ass goodbye."
