Virginia starts recount in attorney general race
Source: Politico
Virginias Board of Elections certified Democrat Mark Herring as the winner by 165 votes out of 2.2 million cast in last months off-year election.
Republican Mark Obenshain requested a recount and expresses confidence that he can still come out on top.
Local jurisdictions will recount the ballots, supervised by election observers and representatives from both parties. Disputed ballots will then be reviewed. The process is overseen by a three-judge panel in Richmond.
If Herring prevails after the recount, Democrats will control all three statewide constitutional offices for the first time since 1989.

(54,410 posts)It will be hard to accept a Republican victory, but with a vote this close, they could still win even using legitimate tallying methods, much as they might be unfamiliar with them.

(24,780 posts)As it stands that Dems would control the top 3 for the first time in 25 years. But even if not, that a Dem got that close is a moral victory in a state that for so long looked bright red.
