KPUA cancels Rush Limbaugh radio show in Hilo
Source: KPUA
Hilo, Hawaii March 5, 2012: New West Broadcasting announced today that it is discontinuing the Rush Limbaugh program on KPUA AM 670 in Hilo, Hawaii effective immediately.
Chris Leonard, President and General Manager of New West released the following statement this morning:
We have always encouraged spirited discussion about national and local issues on KPUA and from time to time those discussions may be deemed by some to be objectionable. We are strong believers in the first amendment and have recognized Mr. Limbaugh's right to express opinions that often times differ from our own, but
it has never been our goal to allow our station to be used for personal attacks and intolerance. The most recent incident has crossed a line of decency and a standard that we expect of programming on KPUA whether it is locally produced or a syndicated program like the Rush Limbaugh show.
While much of the national debate regarding this issue is now being framed in political terms, the decision for us is one of decency and responsibility. Regardless of one's political views on the issue being discussed, we feel the delivery was degrading and the continued comments over several days to be egregious. As a result, we are discontinuing the Rush Limbaugh program on KPUA effective immediately.

FWIW - KPUA's programming is an eclectic mix of shows, not an all-day RW Talk Radio format.

(8,067 posts)today. I just sent a print letter to my senators, will send one to my congressperson tonight.
Written letters carry more impact that e-mails or phone-calls.
If elected officials--especially those running in 2012--get enough heat on this, we can hopefully see this done.
Best wishes.

This is an update of an earlier OP.
Currently there are almost 10,000 signatures and the goal is 25,000 but April. I don't know if this was first posted yesterday but if it was then I'm hoping there will be >100,000.

(806 posts)common to Clear Channel stations.
Just on the first page of google results, I found:
http://www.rushradio947.com/main.html
http://www.wrno.com/main.html
http://www.wrdu.com/main.html
Note the common template of all their web pages.
As far as I can tell, Clear Channel cares more about selling ads and making money than advancing any political agenda (except that which makes it easier for them do business as a mega-radio operator--something I believe should not exist, but I digress...)
They're in business to cash in on listenership trends. They might be up for a "format change" sooner rather than later, if they start seeing the numbers go south.

(10,303 posts)For years, their stations WSJS and WPTF carried Mr. Limbaugh's program offerings. Then Clear Channel discontinued these stations rights to air his, and Mr. Hannity's offerings as well - and switched formats on two stations they owned to "conservative talk" and re-labelled them "Rush Radio".
After the switch these stations have struggled ratings-wise. IMO, time for WSJS and WPTF to go out on an advertising blitz and ensure they have more "live and local" material in their programming lineup.

(13,600 posts)Rush is the featured show on their nationwide string of AM hate radio stations. You'd think that they would be anxious to do something like this, given their omnipresent image advertising to faster Romney's candidacy.
