Aurora Australis abandons rescue of Russian vessel in Antarctica

Amid fears it would become trapped in deadly sea ice, the Aurora Australis has abandoned its rescue of the stranded Akademik Shokalskiy in Antarctica, with a new strategy to free the vessel and its passengers to be developed.

The Australian ice-breaker came within 11 nautical miles of the trapped Russian vessel before abandoning its mission. More than 70 scientists, explorers and tourists from Australia and New Zealand have been stuck on the ship since Christmas Eve...

Three icebreakers couldn't make it (only two mentioned in the article, but a French one tried first). They'll have to wait to see if the ice thaws more as the summer progresses, but right now they're going to take almost everyone off by helicopter.
