AP Tells George Zimmerman To Quit Using Its Photo For His Painting

The Associated Press has sent a cease-and-desist letter to George Zimmerman's attorney, arguing a painting he released of the special prosecutor who charged him with the murder of Trayvon Martin was copied directly from an AP photo.
"George Zimmerman clearly directly copied an AP photo to create his painting of Florida State Attorney Angela Corey," the AP's Director of Media Relations, Paul Colford, told TPM Friday in an e-mailed statement. "The AP has sent a cease-and-desist letter asserting its copyright in the photo to the lawyer who recently represented Zimmerman. That lawyer has responded, and though she no longer represents Mr. Zimmerman, she will be forwarding the letter to him today."
The AP photographer who took the photo of Corey, Rick Wilson, is being represented by Jacksonville attorney John Phillips, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
"If you've seen the two photos, it's identical," Philips told the Sentinel, adding: "You just can't do that. You just can't take somebody else's work and make it your own."

(10,960 posts)Doing interpretative paintings from news photography is so far inside fair use that it boggles the mind that anyone could be this offensively hostile to expressive freedoms.
Fuck AP.
(The Obama CHANGE poster case was about 1,000 times more meritorious than this, and that was a non-starter)

(20,818 posts)at all, it was nothing more than a photoshopped copy of the copyright-protected photo. AP is well within its rights to protest this and shut it down. Then again, who's surprised? Zimmy doesn't have enough brain cells, let alone creativity and originality, to paint or create anything original at all. And of course he'd feel entitled to do whatever he wanted without any consequences or accountability. And so far he's been able to do just that, including getting away with cold-blooded murder of an innocent kid just trying to walk home from the damned store.

(62,276 posts)At minimum Zimmerman must show he didn't just photoshop it, print it out, and paint over it in a color by numbers sort of way.
Which he won't be able to show because that's clearly what he did.

(889 posts)Flood ebay with thousands of paintings done by "George Zimmerman". Of course, the paintings would have to past two tests.
One, they would have to be very poorly done. And two, they would have to have some slight connection with the case. So paint a gavel next to a Florida orange. Sign it George Zimmerman. Paint a tank rumbling down a sidewalk, going past a palm tree. Sign it George Zimmerman.
