Military dog captured by Taliban fighters, who post video of their captive

Source: Washington Post

In the annals of prisoner of war videos, this seems to be a first. A slightly befuddled Belgian Malinois appears on a tight leash, surrounded by heavily armed, bearded men boasting of their battlefield loot.

Wearing a black protective vest, the dog wags its tail at certain points and appears more confused than terrified as its captors showcase specialized rifles and a global positioning device with a blinking light they say came attached to the dog.
“Allah gave victory to the mujahideen!” one of the fighters exclaims. “Down with them, down with their spies!”

A link to the video was posted this week on the Twitter account of a user who often disseminates Taliban propaganda. A Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahid, said the dog was captured after a lengthy firefight between U.S. forces and Taliban fighters in the Alin Nigar district of Afghanistan’s Laghman province in late December.

SNIP

Lt. Col. Will Griffin, a spokesman for the international military coalition in Afghanistan, confirmed Thursday in an e-mail that the force lost a military working dog during an operation in December. He did not provide further details.

Taliban, Mujahadeen , egotistical, religious, dogmatic propaganda. It is as much a LIE as the Christian propaganda many of our soldiers are indoctrinated with. When will both sides learn to see how programmed they are to hate each other because of their ancient desert dogma's.

"religious dogma is a huge problem.."

As are imaginary red and blue lines on a map that exist nowhere but in our minds, and imaginary pieces of credit, and politics... and a host of other imaginary things we predicate our lives and our daily decisions on.

On the other hand, maybe it's simply people that are the problem, as we tend to many of our imaginary constructs to rationalize our greed and temper.

I understand that in the Arabic cultures dogs do not fare well as opposed to cats which the Prophet seemed to have a soft spot for. Although Islam implores their disciples to be kind to all animals (except rats and scorpions in Holy places), dogs are viewed as being borderline and black dogs especially suspect as being evil.

But this animal soldier is as much a member of our military as our sons and daughters. The money, training and upkeep is a very large investment. The injuries they can suffer in the line of duty are no less real. The evil this dog will suffer at the hands of his captors is no less horrific.

POW/MIA until they all come home.

The dog looks like he's been fed over the past month or so. He was wagging his tail at someone there, maybe he's valued more than their local dogs and gets decent care. Has a human friend who cares for him.

Those 'pack' dogs are trained when vest is on to stand quietly and accept different handlers.

Shame the dog got separated from his handler and with guns still attached to the pack!

Afghan Taliban capture British military dog

ISAF officials in Afghanistan have confirmed a military dog went missing during a mission in December last year.

US military sources say the dog belonged to a coalition partner and the BBC understands it was working for British forces.

The Taliban earlier released footage of what they claimed was a dog they captured from US troops.

They said the dog, apparently called Colonel, was wearing a GPS tracking device, a torch and small camera.

Yes, I'm cynical, but does anyone else see a huge propaganda opportunity here?

US will 'rescue' this dog, send in the seals or whatever, make a huge proclamation, "we saved this dog!, our military brother!, no one left behind!"...

And the wags will eat it up, oh will they eat it up..."See.. our military isn't a brutal force of oppression throughout the world - we SAVED the dog! USA #1!!!#"...

Even my cynicism surpises me once in a while
