Anti-bullying bill approved by Iowa Senate Education Committee on partisan vote

A bill aimed at preventing bullying in Iowas schools cleared the Iowa Senate Education Committee Wednesday and was sent to the Senate floor.
Senate Study Bill 3149 was approved on a 9-5 partisan vote with Democrats in support and Republicans against.
The measure addresses the fact that more than 2,000 incidents of bullying and harassment in Iowas schools, officials said. The bill provides for parental notification and addresses issues of cyber-bullying, including clarification of off-grounds authority. The bill also addresses professional development and attempts to provide better reporting, lawmakers said.
Voting no is not a solution, said Sen. Robert Hogg, D-Cedar Rapids, a proponent of the legislation. Every kid iin Iowa ought to be able to go to school in a safe, healthy learning environment. They shouldnt have to be dealing with this
This bill is a significant step forward.
