University of Maryland says 300,000 records were hacked

Source: Baltimore Business Journal

A University of Maryland database containing more than 300,000 records of faculty, students, staff and other personnel was breached on Tuesday.

The records contain information from the University of Maryland’s College Park and Shady Grove campuses. The database breached includes information of individuals who received a university ID dating back to 1998. The database contains 309,079 records that included the person’s name, Social Security number, date of birth and university ID number.

No financial, academic, health, or contact information were compromised, University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh said in an email to former and present faculty, students and staff.

“I am truly sorry,” Wallace wrote. “Computer and data security are a very high priority of our university.”
