Jay Paterno confirms he's running for lieutenant governor
Source: The Patriot-News (Harrisburg, PA)
Jay Paterno, the son of legendary Penn State football head coach Joe Paterno, said Thursday he is running for lieutenant governor.
The confirmation came after Paterno said someone found his unfinished campaign website Thursday morning and began sharing it. The site is expected to be fully operational this afternoon.
Were circulating petitions, and were hoping to get on the ballot, and if were fortunate enough to get the signatures and get on the ballot, yeah, were going to run, he told PennLive.com Thursday.
Paterno, a Centre County Democrat, had been widely rumored to be considering a run to challenge incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Glenn G.T. Thompson.

(102,292 posts)seems like bad timing, at a minimum?
I'm not from Penn, so I clearly don't know.

Believe me - the people of my home state DO NOT want this guy in office. I'm sure he thinks he's entitled to it.

(95,337 posts)Jay is actually a democrat who has campaigned for Obama. I'm still guessing he wants to clear up his dad's name, but he's the Paterno that jokingly ran for the PA-17 house race back in 2004 (and lost even with Cheney & Bush stumping for him).

(22,145 posts)majority! There are two other Democrats running, but I don't know that much about them right now.

(95,337 posts)In 2012 the Democrats swept every statewide race in Pennsylvania. In fact if you added up all the votes for the congressional race the Democrats beat the republican. It's just messed up with redistricting and the 2010 Tea Party surge hurt the state. If we can get the vote out like we did with Ed Rendell and Bob Casey we can win state wide easily. But if dem voters get lazy like they did in 2010 then we're doomed.

(95,337 posts)Jay has a brother Scott who is a bit of a screw-up. Scott ran as a republican for the PA-17 US House seat and was easily defeated even with Bush and Cheney campaigning for him and in a district that leans republican and was just on the outskirts of Happy Valley USA (Penn State region). Scott never really amounted to much.
But turns out this is about Jay - don't know much about him which means he probably actually has a better career than living off of Daddy's name. (just like Scott).

(17,469 posts)just no.
If you have so little political savvy that you don't understand why this is a bad idea, then you really have NO business in office.

(6,594 posts)don't overestimate people especially voters. We had 8 years of Bush and that was never a good idea.

(5,069 posts)and especially when the beneficiary rides the coat-tails from sports to politics...Nepotism alone was bad enough in the Bush family and the Cheneys and then you have the nepotism + sports with the Gorge Allen family now there is an asshole for you....
I believe it is also too abundant in the Democratic Party - you have the Bayh family, the Cuomos, the Sarbanes to name just a few....I didn't particularly care for Bayh and don't know that much about Sarbanes and Cuomo....
But I feel that the motive for running should not be to clear up the skeletons in the closet - there are enough problems where committed people are needed.
