Romney Leads GOP Contest, Trails in Matchup with Obama
Source: Pew Research Center
Mitt Romney has retaken a significant lead nationally in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, even as he has fallen further behind Barack Obama in a general election matchup. Moreover, Obamas own job approval rating has reached 50% for the first time since last May, shortly after the killing of Osama bin Laden.
The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted March 7-11 among 1,503 adults, including 1,188 registered voters and 538 Republican and Republican-leaning voters, finds that Romney leads Rick Santorum, 33% to 24%, in the GOP nomination contest. A month ago, the two men were in a virtual tie (28% Romney, 30% Santorum).
But both GOP frontrunners are running well behind Barack Obama in general election matchups. Among all voters, Obama leads Romney by 12 points (54% to 42%) and Santorum by 18 points (57% to 39%). Obamas advantage among women voters, while largely unchanged from a month ago, remains substantial 20 points over Romney and 26 points over Santorum.

And that's before three more months of Romney pandering to the extremes of the Republican base.

Between that and his SuperPAC attack lies against President Obama which are sure to saturate us until November we can't get complacent. By the election RMoney's pandering to the rabid right will be long forgotten by most voters.

he's the ONLY candidate who can beat Obama.
Based on these numbers, who can he say this with a straight face?
If Santorum were smart, he'd use this poll to make his case.
