WASHINGTON (AP) Actor George Clooney and his father have been arrested at a protest outside the Sudanese Embassy in Washington.
The protesters accuse Sudan's president, Omar al-Bashir, of provoking a humanitarian crisis and blocking food and aid from entering the Nuba Mountains in the county's border region with South Sudan.
Clooney, his father, Nick and others, including Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Moran of Virginia and NAACP President Ben Jealous, were arrested after being warned three times not to cross a police line outside the embassy. They were handcuffed and placed into a U.S. Secret Service van.
Clooney said earlier that he hopes to draw more attention to the issue and that if action is not taken in the next three to four months "we're going to have a real humanitarian disaster."

(18,402 posts)Clooney and his partner in the Sudan issue had the whole hour. And one of the things Clooney said he contributed to the effort was his "nose" for media and publicity. He's been making the rounds of the news shows (Chris Matthews, Rose--both of whom appeared in his Ides o March movie!), met with the President, and then gets arrested. He really does have the publicity charm! He said his father, a journalist, was always saying his hot stories would get pre-empted by Elizabeth Taylor. Clooney said, when inviting him to accompany them on a trip to Sudan, "I'll be your Elizabeth Taylor."
Clooney is actually extremely knowledgeable and serious about this issue, and has stuck with it for years. Much more serious advocate than I've seen other Hollywood stars be for their causes.

(16,887 posts)I think he's a brilliant actor, director, producer, activist and not bad to look at either
I really admire what he is choosing to do with his fame and putting it to a good cause and being the change.
I really think that Clooney would be a great political leader should he ever choose to step in that arena. Senator Clooney of California replacing DiFi? Governor Clooney of California after Jerry Brown? President Clooney??? I think he would win and win big. I think he would put forward great ideas and couldnt be bought by anyone.....
Im a big fan
