At least three people have been killed and several badly injured in a huge landslide in a rural area of the north-western American state of Washington, officials say.
The landslide destroyed six houses and covered a road near the town of Oso, about 90km (55 miles) north of Seattle.
It was at least 41m (135ft) wide and 54m deep, local authorities said.
They say that two people were killed at the scene and one died in hospital. The injured included a six-month-old boy.

3 killed, 3 critically injured in Washington state landslide
(CNN) -- [Breaking news update, Sunday, 3:20 a.m.]
People were crying out for help from underneath debris early Sunday after a landslide in Washington state, said City of Arlington fire Capt. Brandon Asher. Rescuers are trying to forge through the wreckage to get to them.
(CNN) -- A devastating landslide Saturday killed three people, cut off a small town and a river and prompted an evacuation notice for fear of a potentially "catastrophic flood event," authorities in Washington state said.
The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said, in addition to those dead, seven adults and a 6-month-old boy were rescued and sent to local hospitals.
One of those hospitals, Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, reported that five patients had been airlifted there and were in its care. Three of those -- including the baby, a 58-year-old man and an 81-year-old man -- were in critical condition Saturday night, according to spokeswoman Susan Gregg.
At least six houses were destroyed in the landslide, though the sheriff's office noted they are still assessing exactly how many structures have been affected.

Three people were killed and at least eight others injured when a rain-soaked hillside above state Highway 530 near Oso gave way Saturday morning. Travis Hots, chief of Snohomish County Fire districts 21 and 22, said a square-mile of mud and debris slid across the road, blocked the river and demolished or damaged up to 30 homes.

We suspect there are people out there but it is far too dangerous to get the responders out to them, Hots said during a media briefing outside the incident command center in Arlington. Hots described an incredibly dangerous situation for the more than 100 rescuers who are trying to access buried structures and debris. The mud is still moving and has the consistency of quicksand. He said the scene overnight was eerie with the sounds of breaking timber and moving debris in the dark.
Rescuers late Saturday failed to find voices they heard yelling from a buried structures, Hots said. By the time they were able to negotiate the shifting mud and debris and get to the area, the voices had gone quiet, he said.....

(115,679 posts)I finally started looking at youtube vids of how to use tablets, being the "I'll use it and read the instructions if I ever need them" type. The evolution of computers is amazing. Yesterday our frig stopped working, light was on but the electronics not working. We shut off the power, turned it back on and the frig worked again. I sit with my partner's desktop across the room, a laptop in front of me, tablet by the table next to the basic kindle and remember back then TI put out their first wonderful and expensive calculator. I flew recently and laughed at my bin of electronics, each has their reason for being.
Yup, walked through the snow uphill to school, both ways, back in the days.

(15,888 posts)Emergency crews were scouring Sunday for 18 people still unaccounted for in the wake of a mudslide officials said killed four people and injured eight others in Washington state as fears were raised of more disastrous flooding.
The number of missing people in the square mile mudslide that washed over Snohomish County would be "fluid," said Snohomish County Fire Chief Travis Hots during a news conference Sunday.
Hots said emergency responders and rescue crews found no signs of life as they scoured the treacherous area Sunday.
The slide that occurred around 11 a.m. (2 ET) Saturday had turned land that spanned neighborhoods into "quicksand," Hots said earlier Sunday.
