13 tornadoes confirmed and more than $20M in damage, but Nebraska 'got really lucky'

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Nancy Gaarder

With 13 tornadoes confirmed and more than $20 million in damage tabulated, it's becoming increasingly apparent that Nebraska was lucky Sunday.

No one was killed, no one was seriously hurt and despite the significant damage to farmsteads and some small towns, none of the more densely populated communities took a direct hit.

“We got really lucky with this storm,” said Barbara Mayes, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Valley. “The track brought it very close to Lincoln, and while it did get into Omaha, the city was spared.”

Earl Imler of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency said total damage from the storm will surpass $20 million.
