Pregnant Sudanese woman sentenced to death for apostasy

A Muslim-by-birth Sudanese woman who married a Christian man was sentenced to death Thursday after she refused to recant her Christian faith, her lawyer said.

Meriam Ibrahim, whose father was Muslim but her mother was an Orthodox Christian from Ethiopia, was convicted of "apostasy" on Sunday and given four days to repent and escape death, lawyer Al-Shareef Ali al-Shareef Mohammed said.

The 26 year old, who is eight months pregnant, was sentenced after that grace period expired, Mohammed said.

The sentence drew immediate condemnation from Amnesty International, which called it "abhorrent." Mohammed called the conviction rushed and legally flawed since the judge refused to hear key defense witnesses, as well as ignored constitutional provisions on freedom of worship and equality among citizens.

Things are horrifyingly worse for women in countries with Sharia law.

Women should do what ever they can to flee any country that has sharia law. It's contemptible. I'm in favor of giving every single woman that wants it asylum.

Mixed messages are being sent about when the true Islam is being represented and when it's being wrongly applied to these kinds of acts. Anyone know for certain?

by the government of Sudan. Take from that what you will. In my opinion, there is no good sharia law and I consider any country that has their laws based on it to be shitholes.

xstianity is directly responsible for millions, if not billions, of deaths worldwide.

While I certainly do not condone any such atrocities, I feel that is also important to point out the travesty that such a hateful, divisive, and intolerant, religion has as it's history. For every single person worldwide who has ever been killed for just being a xstian, thousands have been killed for NOT being xstian.

My Jewish ancestors were forced to flee Spain or be killed 500 years ago because of the Inquisition.

Suppose that a group of criminals just today murdered 50 innocent people. Maybe this group is the mafia, maybe this group is neo-nazi. Whatever.

Should we be outraged? According to the logic of your post, not so much. Because there are other groups that have murdered more than 50 people.

So instead of being outraged by an atrocity, we'll just play a game. We'll first make a disclaimer, such as "I certainly do not condone any such atrocities...".

Then we'll make a list of bad groups, groups that are worse than whatever group is in question. That makes the group in question seem less evil by comparison. And we'll call that just being honest.

(If this post makes me sound angry, it's because I am. Let's not change the subject, or muddy the waters. This is all about the oppression of a Sudanese woman, and nothing else. The history of other religions does not matter here. The price of tea in China does not matter here.)

Local media report the sentence on the woman, who is pregnant, would not be carried out for two years after she had given birth.

and her son? Do they want money? Is that why they filed the charges and forged the birth certificates with the fake name? The whole thing stinks.
