Greek neo-Nazis hold position, aim for Europe

As results filtered in from Sunday’s first round of local elections, it was clear his promise has yet to be met.

Even with most of the party’s 18 lawmakers facing charges including incitement to murder, and a third of them locked up in pre-trial detention, Golden Dawn still managed to boost its support in several areas including Athens.

One of its MPs, Ilias Kasidiaris, who will be tried for assault and illegal weapons possession, picked up over 35,000 votes and 16.12 percent in the Athens mayoral race for a fourth-place finish.

Fellow lawmaker Ilias Panagiotaros, also on trial for assault, secured over 179,000 votes and 11.13 percent as candidate for greater Athens governor, also finishing fourth.

You may remember Kasidiaris for assaulting a woman during a TV debate. He's also on bail for charges in the investigation of the murder of a left wing rapper:

Kasidiaris was released on bail of 50,000 euros ($67,600). He, Michos and Ilias Panagiotaros were ordered not to leave Greece. A fourth Golden Dawn legislator, Yannis Lagos, was ordered to be kept in detention. All four denied the charges.

The four lawmakers were arrested on Saturday alongside Mihaloliakos and two dozen party members.

They have been charged on what prosecutors say is evidence linking the party with a series of attacks, including the stabbing of rapper Pavlos Fissas on September 17 and the killing of an immigrant earlier this year. A trial date has not been set.

Four of the six Golden Dawn deputies facing charges of participating in a criminal organization were being deposed by an Athens prosecutor on Tuesday afternoon amid tight security at the Greek capital's main courthouse complex, where a few dozen supporters of the extreme far-right group gathered to express their support.

Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris and deputies Yiannis Lagos, Ilias Panagiotaros and Nikos Michos were to respond to charges that they were involved in criminal activities overseen by the party's chief Nikos Michaloliakos, and that they knew of the murder by a party member of anti-fascist hip-hop artist Pavlos Fyssas on September 17.

I don't think it's godwining the thread to say that the widespread support for a violent fascist party is horribly reminiscent of the Nazis, back when they still contested elections rather than banning them.
