Man Found With Shotgun and Machete on NYC Subway
17 minutes
BY NBC NEW YORK
A former Marine was arrested on the subway in Brooklyn after police found he was carrying a duffel bag containing a shotgun, a cache of ammunition, a laser and a machete, law enforcement sources say.
It's not clear what he was doing, but his mother told NBC 4 New York on Wednesday that he has a history of mental illness. She said he feels responsible for protecting New Yorkers and is burdened by guilt that he let 9/11 happen.
Police were called after witnesses reported seeing the 27-year-old man on the S53 bus in Bay Ridge at about noon with some kind of weapon sticking out of a bag, according to law enforcement sources.
By the time police arrived, he'd already gotten off the bus, the sources said.
Officers canvassed the neighborhood and located the man waiting for a Manhattan-bound R train close to the bus stop. Police approached him and asked to check his bag.

(15,882 posts)Undo Ronnie Reagan's evil. Or, like you said, treat the symptoms (though that will never happen in this country, as long as it is this country).
As long as we focus on the symptoms, though, the cause will always be with us.

(9 posts)Also, are the "insane" really that different from the rest of us? Weren't people trying to stand against institutionalizing the mentally ill like prisoners? A lot of people on our side were against locking up "crazy" people and throwing away the key. Maybe Reagan was working with our side on this one for once when he was governor of California....don't get me wrong....there are plenty of other things to pin on Reagan!

(15,882 posts)People who are sick deserve treatment like anyone else.
And Reagan was never on anyone's side except his own.
Don't bother replying, I won't read it. Not worth my time.

(1,957 posts)Has there been a study if troops who come back start having mental illness symptoms(very understandable when they are forced into intolerable conditions and let loose when they come back) or do some actually pass the tests of "mental fitness" yet have mental issues?

(50,955 posts)a debilitating mental illness. He also believed us when we told him that we would respect him if he fought for America, so he went off and served three terms in Iraq. He comes home, obviously needing extensive therapy, supervision and help. For a while, at least, he needs a live in situation where he could be prevented from hurting himself or others.
And we don't give it to him. Instead we give him a gun.
This story is heartbreaking.

(22,000 posts)It probably would have been another mass killing. The sad thing is though they stopped this one, there are many more that will go undetected.
