Two Indian sisters 'gang-raped', killed and hanged from a tree

Source: theguardian

Three men arrested, including two police officers, after teenagers' bodies are discovered in Uttar Pradesh.

Authorities in northern India have arrested three men, including two police officers, suspected of gang-raping and killing two teenage sisters before hanging their bodies from a mango tree.

The deaths have sparked renewed public outrage over sexual violence in the country.

Villagers found the girls' bodies on Wednesday morning, hours after they disappeared from fields near their home in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh state, police superintendent Atul Saxena said. The girls, who were 14 and 15, had gone into the fields because there was no toilet in their home.

Hundreds of villagers spent the rest of the day in silent protest over alleged police inaction in the case. Indian TV channels showed video of the villagers sitting under the girls' bodies as they swung in the wind, preventing authorities from taking them down until the suspects were arrested.

Police arrested the three men later in the day and were searching for four more suspects.

Autopsies confirmed the girls had been gang-raped and strangled before being hanged, Saxena said.

the crimes committed against women by men, greatly outnumber crimes committed against men by women, almost all of which are sexual.

We need to identify why men commit these hideous crimes and why we always shield them, by lumping crime together, sorta like all politicians are crooked, when we know which party bears more guilt, especially the obvious evidence of men's hatred and need to subjugate and punish women, simply because they think all women should be sex slaves.

Even though technically the dowry system is illegal in India (a system where the parents of the daughter would pay the grooms family an crazy amount of money to allow their daughter to marry their son), there is still a major stigma in India for having baby girls. And for many regions of India they ignore the law anyway (and it's not enforced by local police)

The ratio of women to men in Indian is 940 women for every 1000 men. For a country with 1.2 billion people that means there are probably hundreds of thousands of men throughout India who aren't capable of finding a bride because there aren't enough women out there to marry. If you look at the link below you'll see that many of the northern states in India that number falls near or even below 900. BTW the state mention in the article, Uttar Pradesh, it's at 874 (and still not the lowest).

So imagine you're in a country and especially a region of a country where there just aren't enough women available to marry. Women can be a bit fussier now and some of these men just aren't desirable marriage material. I watched a documentry about this and there seems to be a bit of a 'gang' mentality with these men unable to find wives and that this might be the reason for the increase in violence towards women in India. It was also interesting when they interviewed mothers in Northern India who committed female infantcide. One woman gave birth to 6 girls in her lifetime and she felt it was easier just to leave them for dead than to burdern her family with the extra cost of raising a girl.

What's worse, another piece I watched on HBO's show Vice - the police are of little help to these women being raped. Because even with men unable to find wives they still think they are far superior than the women.

It's disgusting. I've included some good articles about this issue. Honestly I don't know how the problem will ever be solved as long as parents in India still perceive boys to be a better thing to have than girls.

Can you imagine the life an orphaned girl could look forward to in a country with such values? I weep for the plight of women in backwards countries all around the globe, and wonder when these places will grow up.

On another note; these 2 girls were also part of the "untouchable" caste, which apparently made them even more vulnerable to this kind of abuse. The whole caste system is another example of an antiquated system that needs to go.

And according to that documentary, it's not uncommon that the sons will get better food, better education and better overall care than the the daughters.

Honestly, knowing that the ration of women to men in India is 940 to 1000, if I had a daughter I'd start asking for a dowry. Now there is an overabundance of men in the country - so why shouldn't my daughter have the selection of the best one who will take care of her.

That documentary (link below) says there are 37million more men than women in China (population 1.3billion). Knowing that India tops around the 1 Billion mark that means that the number of extra men in that country is in the millions (although I suspect a portion of that number includes infant, children and elderly).

it's not as traditional as before where the families would introduce them to the person they think they should marry.

the girls themselves have goals other than just finding a guy to marry and have kids. they want to go to school, have careers, experience things.

the girl in delhi who was raped and killed was one of these. she was out on her own with a male friend from school. it's a normal part of the western world that is increasing in india. and these girls whenever they do decide to marry will not marry or even date a guy who was brought up thinking men are more special and her place is in life is how good a wife and mother she is. she will want someone who shares her interests and views on life, issues etc. and this could be anyone from the country or even outside.

the people who think girls should only be brought up to be good servant for her husband are the ones who are aborting the girls the most.

We have CEOs that are doing businesses with countries like India and China then denouncing Obamacare's policy of free birth control. Like that CEO from Hobby Lobby where it's selling alot of cheap crafting materials made in China and wants the Supreme Court to say it's ok for his business to not include birth control in healthcare. Really? You're ok for one country forcing abortions and committing infantcide when the wrong gender is born yet you would not allow your own people to have a reliable method of family planning.

I thought in India they were getting ultrasounds to determine the sex (and aborting if a girl) or even worse leaving the newborn girl to die. I need to remember that documentary it was really excellent information about the whole selective sex birth and the disproportion of men to women in countries like India and China.

Google is my friend - this was the documentary

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It's_a_Girl:_The_Three_Deadliest_Words_in_the_World

I didn't remember the name but I did remember it started with a scene where an Indian woman talked about how she would strangle to death any child she had that was born a girl.

even with the girls there are many restrictions and it's very difficult for people outside of the country to adopt.

but i just thought it was interesting how there were a few more steps that needed to be done before they can allow a boy to be adopted.

it's more a sign of the anti female attitude in the country than any issues with adoptions .

Thu May 29, 2014, 04:57 PM

I was very fortunate and was able to adopt my daughter from China 10 years ago. It only took 10 months from the date our dossier was forwarded to the Chinese authorities until the date we received our notification that a child had been assigned to us. But about 3 or 4 years later the country revised its adoption laws and the qualifications required to adopt. Even if we had had the money to do so, my husband and I would no longer have qualified. Now, I understand that it takes as long as 3 years from the time the dossier is submitted until assignment of a child. China realized was the imbalence in genders was a problem and moved to remedy it. Along with stopping the one child policy, there has been a very active campaign to raise the value of girls in society, as well as trying to develop an adoption culture in China so as to keep the abandoned girls, and many are still abandoned unfortunately, within the country. As much as I love my child and am thankful to her birth mother for abandoning her rather than killing her and the Chinese authorities for giving her to me, I am glad to see the changes.

that was a shockingly dismaying documentary. I watched it on youtube without captions so I missed half of it. Maybe that was best, as it was hard enough to watch with only half of it in english.

It puts to shame our worries about gender inequality here, but at the same time, it shows why we are still fighting the battle here. Too many people in the world, including this country, still feel women are inferior.

Even in the history of the US, when children were needed to help out at home, and often didn't even get to go to school, boys were better than girls because they could do the heavy work of farming and ranching.

It will be a long time before this problem is eradicated worldwide, and until it is, it won't completely be eradicated here in the US.

Oh, hell, why am I complaining...I'm just a woman!

I'm a huge fan of the show 'Vice' which is kinda like a hip version of 60 Minutes and 20/20 where they tackle some hardcore issues you might not see on regular TV. They did a segment about how bad it is with the police in regards to rape and how they are now fighting back.

This was the episode aired a few weeks back if you have HBO (I think you might find it on youtube too): The Pink Gang Rebellion & Genetic Passport (2nd part was how they were doing genetic screenings of those people affected by Cherynobyl).

There are groups of women forming these 'pink gangs' that are starting to fight back (not literaly) when police refuse to take action against rape. It was a good show!

In other times and places where there was an imbalance of men to women (far more women than men), the women come to value men highly. In Russia after WWII there was a serious shortage of men. The women coddled them and competed for them. They "spoiled" them and men were and not expected to pull their share of the weight. Women toiled to rebuild Russia and the men were "allowed" to drink vodka and sleep in. Mothers spoiled their sons and women put up with loutish behavior and alcoholism.

The infanticide and abandonment of girl babies (not to mention gender-specific abortion) has resulted in an extreme shortage of women in several other places besides India. I wonder what the situation is in China, for example. I would wish that the fate of women in those circumstances would be to elevate their status and cause their societies to value them, as women do for men when the roles are reversed. Unfortunately, they seem to be in greater danger.

Brazil still has a chance at democracy, but we will see in the world cup what sorts of atrocities are excuse, and what cultural demons are dressed in pretty uniforms. If Brazil resists the BS and tells the Cup and the Olympics to go to hell, we will knwo there is hope, because they will not have confused global investment with civic character, like we Yanks sadly did. If they go off without a hitch, than Brazil will be just like China, India and Russia, another would be empire hiding it's weakness, in short, just another BRIC in the wall.
