GOP Michigan Guv Backs LGBT Workplace Protections

Source: TPM

CAITLIN MACNEAL – MAY 29, 2014, 6:50 PM EDT

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) on Thursday urged the legislature to amend state civil rights law to include protections for gays and lesbians, according to Detroit News.

State law prohibits discrimination based on "religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status or marital status," but not sexual orientation or gender identity, according to the Huffington Post.

"I don’t believe in discrimination," Snyder told Crain's Detroit Business. "I hope that’s something the Legislature will take up sometime this year."

He did not say whether he would sign a bill if it passed in the legislature, according to Crain's.

Why should people be denied the right to provide for themselves or their families after they've served their time?

Had no problem at all taking away Domestic Partner Health, Life and Insurance Benefits from state Government employees.

"In yet another boost for gay rights, a federal judge in Michigan has blocked the state from enforcing a 2011 law that bans public employers from offering benefits to same-sex couples, concluding the law is discriminatory toward the gay community.

“The historical background and legislative history of the Act demonstrate that it was motivated by animus against gay men and lesbians,” U.S. District Judge David Lawson wrote in his 51-page ruling. “… Looking to the history and text of Public Act 297, it is hard to argue with a straight face that the primary purpose — indeed, perhaps the sole purpose — of the statute is other than to deny health benefits to the same-sex partners of public employees.”

Lawson issued an injunction barring Michigan from enforcing the 2011 law two days after the U.S. Supreme Court held that married same-sex couples were entitled to federal benefits — a ruling that Lawson cited in his opinion, noting the high court offered him guidance in reaching his conclusion.

Lawson’s ruling was part of a civil lawsuit filed by five same-sex couples who sued the state over a 2011 law that prohibits various public employers, including cities and counties, from offering health benefits to same-sex couples. The American Civil Liberties Union challenged the law on behalf of the plaintiffs, who either lost their health insurance or stood to lose it as a result of the law."

Point 1: Snyder officially became Michigan's Governor January 1, 2011 so he SIGNED the LAW banning Domestic Partner Benefits.

Point 2: Anytime Snyder lips is moving, he's lying.

Point 3: Snyder didn't plan to sign Right to Work for Less in Michigan he say, until he did in 2012.

Point 4: Never, ever trust Rick Snyder!

One sentence in the TPM article says it all:

He did not say whether he would sign a bill if it passed in the legislature, according to Crain's.

With State Representative David Nathan (D-Detroit), also confirms that Snyder should not be trusted for anything he says, boast or expresses out of this mouth -- because more likely than not a bone is falling out of it.
