BERKELEY Calif. (Reuters) California residents have voted for a plan to spend $600 million to build houses for homeless veterans in the state with the highest number of ex-servicemen without a roof in the United States.
Under the plan backed by voters in a primary election on Tuesday, the state will sell bonds to build apartments and temporary shelters for qualifying veterans or those recovering from physical injuries or mental health issues.
California has about 25 percent or 19,000 homeless veterans, according to the Coalition for Veterans Housing support group.
With the winding down of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of those returning need housing, employment, and mental health and drug treatment.

Legalization will be on the 2016 ballot.

(47,535 posts)We lived in California in the 90s. Ballot measures allocating sums of money to lofty ideas were always approved. But the funds to support them were never included in the measures.

(16,191 posts)Basically, a number of years ago the voters here in California approved an initiative that would create a loan program for veterans, so they could buy homes, farms, and businesses. Because the bond rate is higher than the fed rate, their loans ended up being way more expensive than privately funded loans, so veterans haven't been using the program and the funds have been sitting there unused, and most of the previously approved bonds were never sold.
Yesterdays measure redirected a big chunk of the funds from that program into a new effort that will more directly house homeless veterans. It really was a no-brainer.
