An Army deserter from East Liberty needed just two phone calls to gain access to a Citibank account belonging to one of the world's richest men, federal investigators say. With Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's debit card in hand since January, though, Brandon Lee Price didn't go on much of a spending spree, authorities say.
Price, 28, paid off a delinquent $658.81 loan, attempted to wire $15,000 to someone, shopped at the GameStop near his home and tried to make a $1 purchase at a Dollar General store, according to an FBI affidavit filed in U.S. District Court. A grand jury on Tuesday indicted Price on a bank fraud charge.
"I can tell you that Citibank alerted us and contacted law enforcement, which we're appreciative of," said David Postman, a spokesman for Vulcan Inc., of which Allen is chairman. "It does raise some questions and we're working with Citibank to better understand how this happened and what can be done to ensure something like this doesn't happen again -- to us or anyone else."
Forbes ranked Allen 48th on its latest list of the world's richest people, with a net worth of $14.2 billion. He owns the Seattle Seahawks and the Portland Trail Blazers, has donated more than $1 billion to various charities and founded the Allen Institute for Brain Science, with a $100 million commitment, to fund medical research into how the brain works.
