Trees Fall, Power Cut As Winds Hit 70 Miles an Hour, Say Officials

Hurricane Iselle made landfall Thursday night on Hawaii's Big Island, toppling trees and knocking out power to thousands but so far causing no major injuries or damage.
The Category 1 hurricanethe first to hit the Aloha State in 22 yearscrossed over the Puna district on the southeastern part of the island about 9:15 p.m. local time, with maximum sustained winds of about 70 miles an hour, local civil defense officials said. Its projected path is expected to take it past the island overnight with high winds and steady rain, as the rest of Hawaii braced for likely days of stormy havoc with a rare second hurricane, Julio, tracking closely behind.
Civil defense officials said power was knocked out to about 18,000 homes, as well as a geothermal plant in Puna that released poisonous hydrogen sulfide gas as a result. Officials advised nearby residents to take shelter or leave the area. Numerous trees fell blocking roads, and adding to local anxiety levels.
"Nothing crazier than the sound of intense wind followed by the sound of trees snapping and coming down hard + in slow motion," Big Island resident Krysteen Nawdan wrote on her Twitter TWTR -1.06% account.

(297,314 posts)the really big one and only hit Kauai.
Thank you, JL.. we all have our 2 week supplies in case we have to go without electricity and water.. but, we just aren't sure what's going to happen. It looked pretty scary what's happened on the Big Island so far.. I posted the articles(about Julio too) to my FB just now.
Respecting the Power of Mother Nature and being prepared while waiting for the other shoe to drop!

(297,314 posts)pretty big one.. I was in California when Iwa hit in 82.. just remember reading about it in the paper.
And, Kauai was the only one that got hit those times(with Iniki.. it looked like it was going past and then it turned around and headed straight for us with 5 hrs warning).. now with these two traveling up from the South.. it seems all the Islands are getting hit and we're last. So unpredictable, david.

(22,000 posts)I think they are going to become a regular occurrence. So put your seatbelt on and stay safe.

(297,314 posts)we hadn't had one in so long but there's all these super storms everywhere else.. and sure enough.. now it's our turn again.

(160,545 posts)It is great, however, that you had the forward thinking and organization to get prepared for this. 22 years is a long time. People probably aren't all that used to this crap where you are, as they are in Florida, etc.!
Hope it will be even longer before the next hurricanes show up.
We'll will be watching to see you come through this.
I'm going to sleep, hope when I see your posts next, you'll have written you and yours are absolutely fine. Be so safe.

(297,314 posts)seems it all came rushing back and so many people I've talked to say they're always prepared with the basic rations just in case. It took us 5 years to rebuild the Island.
I remember reading Steven Spielberg was wrapping up making Jurassic Park when it came and he had a plane fly back blankets and supplies for people here. Sweetie!
I will try to keep you all updated from a personal stand point.. but, the Electric Co. will turn off the power if the winds are too fierce. Fingers crossed!

(12,504 posts)It's just after noon on Maui and we have had barely a breeze and about a cup full of rain. All smoke and no fire.
It looks like when the storm hit the Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa mountain peaks on the Big Island the storm got torn to shreds and has dissipated much of it's energy.
What a bummer after making that Costco trip for supplies. A real snoozer of a storm.

(26,060 posts)but they're still expecting up to a foot of rain on the big island. Julio is bearing down also - they're not expecting a direct hit but Julio is a very dangerous, well defined hurricane. Cha - wherever you are, please stay safe.

(297,314 posts)That's been my take on Iselle and Julio.. what you wrote. And, I hear it's going to be on the East side of the Islands and that's where I am. Fingers crossed for everybody in their paths and wakes!

(26,060 posts)that the first storm is bringing a lot of rain and the next one, Julio, is going to be bringing rough surf though luckily will not be a direct hit. Having seen what superstorm Sandy did to my state and our neighbors, my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Stay inside, keep your family safe and curl up with a good book.

It's really windy right now.. we'll see manana. It's Primary Election Day so I hope that goes alright.
Sandy was so scary for you all As was ours in '92..

Kauai and Western Islands:
Kauai took the brunt of Hawaiis last hurricane strike, Iniki, in 1992, but should have the least impacts of the major islands this time around. Still, folks on Kauai can expect up to a foot of heavy rain from Iselle alone and additional rain from Julio until Monday night. Flash floods and mudslides are nearly certain in places.
Thanks to warming seas and expected changes in atmospheric circulation patterns associated with climate change, Hawaiis hurricane threat is expected to increase in coming decades. A recent study showed this effect could send two to three times more storms Hawaiis way by the end of the century. Since Hawaiis hurricanes are so rare, such an increase might be difficult to detect, however."

(160,545 posts)It is good to see, from your article, the difference might play out as so slight in our lifetimes it might not be all that perceptible.
You can expect this rough weather through to Monday night.
You'll be glad you got a good book.
Thanks for posting the new information.
Stay safe.

A mother posted dramatic footage of her family running to avoid falling trees as Iselle began to batter Hawaii late Thursday. Myla Rincon, a 33-year-old student, can be heard screaming: "Get in the house!" as trees begin to crack around her family. "One tree actually came down very close to us - it was very scary," she told NBC News. "We had no idea it would be this strong, and the eye has not even hit yet."
Rincon lives near Pahoa on the eastern end of the Big Island, the main area staring down the barrel of Iselle, which was downgraded to a tropical storm early Friday. A Category 3 hurricane, Julio, was close on Iselle's tail with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph. "I grew up here and I have never seen weather like this before, I have never seen anything this crazy," Rincon said. "Trees are falling on top of houses."

Iselle downgraded from hurricane to tropical storm just before making landfall
Tropical storm Iselle made landfall on Hawaiis biggest island Thursday evening local time, cutting down trees, ripping roofs off buildings and cutting power at a biodiesel plant, leaving 18,000 people without electricity.
There were trees everywhere, the roads were completely blocked, Bob Petrici, a woodsman living outside the town of Pahoa, tells TIME.
Iselle was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm just before it struck Hawaii, yet there was no debate over its ferocity. Thrusting rain and massive waves onto the island, Iselle is expected to release an even heavier downpour as it crashes into the towering Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa mountains. Meteorologists are warning of possible land- and rockslides.
Its absolutely a danger to people, says Professor Steven Businger, principal investigator at Mauna Kea Weather Center. You need to have a nice symmetric situation for a storm to be happy. The ocean is its energy source, so when it runs into a wall, its going to significantly disrupt the circulation of the winds.
Petrici left his house when he smelled the smell of rotten eggs and received an alert that there had been an emergency steam release at the nearby geothermal power plant. Since he owns one of the only hydrogen-sulfide monitors in the area, he felt compelled to check the levels, but failed to reach the plant.

(188 posts)From what I have been following, I have not heard of any injuries, which is super good news. There looks like a lot of trees down, and some building damage, including a couple of piece of roof.
I finally made it to Hawaii 5 years ago and I keep asking myself why it took so long. Been of 3 of the islands (and Hilo moved to the top of my where to retire list), but my wife and I are going to Kauai for the first time in November.

(27,451 posts)Hilo is lovely and not nearly as expensive as other parts of Hawaii. But medical care is an issue. Major health issues and tests are taken care of in Honolulu. There's a Kaiser in Hilo but it has trouble keeping doctors. They all seem to leave. I guess it's too isolated. The VA is way behind with appointments.
My SIL had some medical issues and had to fly to Honolulu for tests and to see a specialist. kaiser paid for it but it's still a big hassle. She's lived on the islands for 15 years, Kauai and Hawaii, and is moving back to the states.
Kauai is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The north shore is breathtakingly beautiful.
